Over time. If I remember correctly the earliest cacti grew up in trees in the Amazon rainforest and slowly adapted to dryer and colder conditions over time. WI Eastern Prickly Pear is cold adapted and shrivels up a bit in winter to survive.

Most folks don’t know that we have Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa) native in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Here one is in bloom back in July.
