"I don't know if Charlottesville has agreed to really create a community of true belonging, which means you have to have all the components of fairness and justice. They have not agreed to create a just community."

As the tributes to Jesse Jackson pour in, I think of Julian Bondβs remarks about Jacksonβs two presidential campaigns: In 1984, Jesse Jackson had been the candidate of Black America; in 1988, he became the Black candidate of disaffected and alienated America -- unemployed meat packers and 1/

Also, I don't know if I think the city should do more, exactly. Or at least I don't expect them to do more right away.
Isn't there a way to talk about plowing as:
First do no harm.
Like, not more maybe just different?

If we're making a list, don't we have to, regretfully, put city government at the top? Plowed ice walls are on every street & impede every crossing. They trap pedestrians who can't safely scale them (hi me!).
I believe they so work hard & mean very well, so maybe no shame. But this is a BIG problem.

On a corporate level--agreed.
I don't see good movement orgs being risk averse. Quite the opposite.
They are disciplined though.
Press didn't help 1960s civil rights orgs on their own unless folks were already activists. They needed to be educated & earn trust in the work.
I see that as still true

I love the idea of learning about the press and movements. It's part of my professional work.
What I would add is that press support of the 1960s movement, for ex, happened through organizers being dedicated media liaisons who cultivated relationships, messaging, and trust. It wasn't spontaneous.

Competence and consent are good considerations for retirement.
Age is not.
Professor, no one will be surprised to learn that I have never worked for a more expert director.
As to selfish, that premises the college re-fills roles. We all know they don't.
In sum: Thank you for your service!

I want to agree.
But graceful would have been: "I'm honored to receive this appointment and, out of love for this university, I respectfully decline until the people's choice of leaders have been sworn in."
Graceful... she has left the building.

It may be too much to hope that Americans can begin to treat each other equally, or that they can develop a political and economic system that will equitably distribute the goods and resources this wealthy nation has in abundance.
I believe it can be done.
Sincerely,
Julian Bond"

It takes a lot of courage to organize. It also takes a lot of humility. To say, I canβt solve this problem or challenge this system by myself and I gotta work with others. And we donβt know if this is gonna work, but itβs worth trying.

All of their albums say "Daryl Hall and John Oates."
We can't go for that (no can do).
