So GCRebuilder doesn't even wanna touch this game (gives me "Memory stream is not expandable." errors)
gc_fst *does* compile it (albeit game's bloated to a standard gamecube gigabyte, whatever) but now the game crashes right after I select a course.
any help diagnosing is appreciated. I'm stumped

good news and bad news
the good: it's as easy as texture modding GameCube .dat files can be. I decided to do this proof of concept based on NSMB's Fire Mario texture (albeit I'm not fully sure if the contrast is just right)
the bad: I'm struggling with compiling this back to an .iso (see reply)

Miscalculated this actually. I determined the number of times as if I was doing half hour sessions instead of hour ones I think. So really I have (atm) to aim for a little less than half of this (bought a few things as I went)
still not great but not as bad as I thought I suppose

It genuinely sounds like somber almost Christmas-like music and I like it at first but then they just HAD to put in those fucking kazoos in there

if classic mario kart (i.e. anything before double dash) is too wonky for you and you want something a little more refined, I'd definitely recommend giving this game a shot (2's further polished but 1's still good) as I feel it's a good hybrid between classic and modern mario kart formulas

ever since dolphin added more proper support for triforce stuff I've been on my arcade gp [2] phase again
I gotta see if it's possible to do texture mods or something

Blurb from an IGN page on Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing talking about an easy way to farm Sega Miles (the game's in-game currency for unlocking things).
"Unlimited Miles
1. Go to Time Trial mode which is (Singleplayer).
2. Choose a player with a Motorcycle (they can recover faster).
3. Choose Tokyo-To Shibuya Downtown level (this level has the least amount of obstacles and drop offs).
4. Use tape or a rubber band to hold down the gas (L Trigger / L2) and just let your character drive though the course over and over again.
It takes about a half hour to earn 15,000 Miles. Your controller may shut off every 15 minutes, this is normal -- you'll have have to turn it back on to allow this to continue"
I've been following this guide on an IGN "cheats" page and just letting this sit for an hour at a time.
after calculating what Sega Miles I need, I'd need to do this process like, 22 times. I think.

man I enjoy this game but I don't remember it being so, grind-y?
I'm more familiar with the Wii version and it's been years since I've played it but I don't remember unlocking things being this time-consuming (it probably was this way and I just played it a lot back then, most likely)

oh yeah no they're ridiculous
albeit while I think it looks cool, for the price of a lego game boy I feel you could actually get a real one on ebay

I should mention that Zelda 1 is earlier within the Famicom Mini line as well (number 5) but that uses the later cartridge version's ROM as opposed to the disk one

I'd say SMB2 also looks coolest with the solid yellow & black label too imo aesthetically that hits just right for me.

Picture of all 10 Disk System game cartridges in the GBA Famicom Mini line (image yoinked from an ebay listing. the lot of these all together is pretty expensive...).
Games included in this line (I'm mostly listing these in their English titles if available) are:
-Super Mario Bros. 2 [For Super Players/The Lost Levels]
-The Mysterious Murasame Castle
-Metroid
-Kid Icarus
-Zelda II
-Shin Onigashima
-Famicom Detective Club - The Missing Heir
-Famicom Detective Club II - The Girl Who Stands Behind
-Akumajou Dracula/Castlevania
-SD Gundam World: Gachapon Senshi - Scramble Wars
cartridges 21-30 in the Famicom Mini line are all disk system titles and all feature branding like this. I'd argue SMB2's probably most common in people's collections from what I've seen.
personally it's my preferred way of playing it on GBA devices.

the display sets are neat too but I could not justify spending 60 something dollars on an 18+ lego set
(feels weird saying that but that's what they say on those boxes)

I don't really collect a whole lot of lego stuff these days anymore but I do still kind of want the larger figurines if nothing else 'cause I think they look neat.
I'm still surprised we even got a wario

Same as the above illustration, but with Mario's palette changed to white and red instead of red and blue, resembling his Fire form.
Same as the above illustration, but with Mario's overalls and shirt colors reversed (blue shirt, red overalls), resembling his classic color scheme.
The background is hue shifted and the clouds are redrawn completely to resemble the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros.
(...or 2 [FDS] if you wanna be technical.)
Same as the above illustration, but with Mario's palette adjusted to resemble his appearance in Hummer Team's bootleg port of Super Mario World. His hair is now a mix of black and dark blue, half of his face is pale from palette limitations, his buttons are now white, cap brim now black, irises now black, and shoes now red.
The background is hue shifted to resemble said game, with a faint, faded outline of the JY Company logo in the sky, further referencing the game.
Some variants for fun.

Airbrush-shaded 2D illustration of Mario, standing proudly, holding his cap in his right hand and putting his left hand on his hip.
He's smiling with his mouth open, meant to be speaking the post's caption, the line he says when he completes a level in New Super Mario Bros.
(Technically, the line comes from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!)
That's-a so nice!
