Today's announcements double down on approaches which have already led to record deaths, with more children killed last year than in the past four years combined.
We urgently need to depart from these deadly policies.
Numbers we'd like to see come down:
- People dying in the channel
- Children traumatised by violent border enforcement
- People unable to return to work due to the damage of the asylum work ban
Numbers our Government won't even count, while the media obsesses over how many people survive crossings.
What will really keep children safe is:
📣 Accountability for deaths in the Channel from the UK and French governments
📣 An end to all police violence at the border
📣 Safe routes to seek asylum in the UK and France

Today Yvette Cooper said she wants to criminalise people crossing the Channel "to keep children safe".
