I've actually made a point to avoid cherry blossom season in Japan because it's also hinoki allergy season! But I've lucked out in seeing the early cherry blossoms on this recent Japan trip (and, also, in seeing late cherry blossoms up in Tohoku on a May trip some years ago)! ๐

The Kyoto sakura spotting was a lovely surprise as my expectations with regards to seasonal flowers were more along the lines of plum blossoms, of which I did see many, including at Kitano Tenmangu. โฉ๏ธ
(Honestly, I actually felt intoxicated by the sight of all those flowers...!!)

Today marks the 67th anniv of the #TibetanUprising. We remember Tibetans who rose up for freedom, dignity & #HumanRights.
Decades later, ๐จ๐ณ govtโs repression, #ArbitraryDetention, and restrictions on religion, language, and culture continue across Tibet and beyond.

For those thinking that I bought A LOT of Funassyi merch, check out the online Funassyiland to see how much more I could have bought!
Also, I actually got gifted a number of items by a very nice fellow Nashitomo (Pear Friend) who I met up with in Kyoto! ๐ฅฐ

I guess I assumed that based on your writing that "unlike me, you don't have to daydream about *my* 'favourite country'"!

"The few HKers who use(d) Twitter were aiming at an international audience."
Don't think so. Particularly those Tweeting in Chinese and who have remained there.

This is a site about which I get a feeling that more people would associate the initials "hk" with "Hell's Kitchen" or "Hello Kitty" than "Hong Kong".

An outrage, but precisely the destination of where things have been heading for years.
Tankies and China-leaning lefties wake the hell up. This is cultural and linguistic destruction, targeting all non-ethnic majority, non-Mandarin Han cultures and languages as well as every minority nationality.

"Where is the Friend's House?" (Iran, 1987) is one of my favourite Abbas Kiarostami/Iranian films of all time along with "A Taste of Cherry" (Iran, 1997). Actually, heck, the two of them are among my favourite films of all time. Period.

Deng Xiaoping said that "To get rich is glorious". But: "Back at the labor market, 59-year-old Dai is packing up after an unsuccessful day job hunting. Reflecting on Chinaโs ability to grow exports last year, Dai said he didnโt feel the benefit. โWe are just workers,โ he added. โWe donโt get rich.โ"

The news that Man Yiu Street pedestrian bridge is being demolished made me a little melancholy. The Central General Post Office is next. Both of these were big part of my life in Hong Kong. Places I walked through almost every day. Sometimes I wonder about the demolished memories we carry with us.

Actually, the Osaka Funassyiland is a permanent Funassyiland -- like the one in Funabashi.
Re pop-ups: there are regular (annual) ones in Nagoya (where there used to be a permanent Funassyiland ๐ฅน), Harajuku (ditto ๐ฅน), Ikebukuro, Yokohama, Omiya, Sendai, Sapporo and Fukuoka as well as Kyoto!

What the... All I can say is that I have tried Vietnamese and Thai as well as Malaysian durian and I just really do prefer Malaysian durian. And, actually, if I were going to get really specific: the red prawn variety from Balik Pulau, Penang!

So... I did go to Kyoto for the first time in 13 years. And yes, there being a pop-up Funassyiland there played a part in my wanting to go there! ๐ซฃ
And since Osaka is not that far away, I couldn't resist going to the Osaka Funassyiland too! ๐
