Global economy must stop pandering to โ€˜frivolous desires of ultra-richโ€™, says UN expert Olivier De Schutter says new economic agenda needed to tackle crises of rising inequality and ecological collapse

Another insightful observation from @deschuttero.bsky.social from the @theguardian.com

You know there is a problem when the UN Special Rapporteur on *Extreme Poverty* thinks Extreme Wealth is the real issue.

Very good to hear Rachel Reeves talking of rejecting the "failed economic dogmas of the past" and rallying against "trickle down & trickle out" in today's #SpringStatement.

Just not sure that the Government is doing enough to deliver the radical changes our economy needs.

25-point swing from Labour shows what people really want The 25โ€‘point swing away from Labour shows voters want peopleโ€‘centred solutions rather than cautious managerialism

I know there'll be lots of folk drawing lessons from the Gorton & Denton by-election. Here's my take for @opendemocracy.net on why we need bolder economic policies that offer real solutions to people's concerns & join the dots of an extractive economic system

Good news on the energy price cap. A 7% fall, driven largely by policy decisions and a bit by wholesale prices, is a relief for the govt. and hhlds. It won't stop the incessant attacks on net zero.
A few red/amber flags to watch out for. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

I enjoyed joining this @aljazeera.com discussion on the global economic order, esp debate on whether America is being unpredictable (8mins). There was a time when what was good for the world was seen as good for the US, but America First is good for neither.

A refreshing, unscripted speech by @albaerbock.bsky.social at #ECOSOC80 that, while it may feel like there is not much to celebrate in today's turbulent world, we should take time to mark the progress we have made and the institutions that made that progress possible

Tens of thousands of people in Kent and Sussex have repeatedly been left without water. Their water company is now under investigation.

Why are water companies failing us again and again? Because we privatised what is an essential public service. @dhnnjyn.bsky.social explains.

Increase taxes for working people, or make the super-rich pay their fair share? The answer seems obvious โ€“ but not to Labour | Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah Rachel Reeves has unnecessarily blocked her options of what to include in her budget, says Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah of the New Economics Foundation

In today's Budget speech the Chancellor acknowledged that freezing tax thresholds will affect "working people" (mentioned only 5 times in today's speech). I do wish she had gone further on taxing those who don't need to work & looked again at her choice framework www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A decade of national renewal? Not exactly.

The chancellor's public investment plans don't come close to our historic investment levels.

Underinvestment has left us with sewage in our rivers, constant railway disruptions, crumbling schools and a shortage of hospital beds.

๐Ÿ‘€Looks like this government is scrapping the two child limit! This is good news for the thousands of children who will be lifted out of poverty and for the economy. Previous NEF analysis found this would reduce the economic cost of child poverty by ยฃ3.2bn a year.

According to OBR "curtain raiser" the Budget will increase taxes by ยฃ26 billion by 29/30 but a huge proportion of these changes (ยฃ18 billion) allocated to doubling headroom. Surely this is the moment to invest more in public services and helping people with the cost of living?

26.11.2025 12:35 ๐Ÿ‘ 5 ๐Ÿ” 4 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

5. Action on the cost of living. ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ

Too many people across the country are struggling to afford even the basics they need to live. This government needs to take action to make life more affordable - including a National Energy Guarantee to bring down people's energy bills.

26.11.2025 10:44 ๐Ÿ‘ 3 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

4. Rewriting the fiscal rules.๐Ÿช™

To make the investments we need to get the UK out of it's current slump, we need to take a different approach to the fiscal framework. Fiscal rules should be replaced with fiscal referees.

26.11.2025 10:44 ๐Ÿ‘ 3 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

3. Make sensible savings. ๐Ÿฆ

Starting with a renegotiation of the government's agreement with the Bank of England to pay for losses from quantitative easing. We shouldn't be sending needless money to the central bank when our public services are on their knees.

26.11.2025 10:44 ๐Ÿ‘ 4 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

2. Investment in public services like the NHS and schools. ๐Ÿš‘๐ŸŽ“

Money raised from measures like taxation should be spent on restoring our public services and making vital investments in the foundations of our economy - not just giving the chancellor extra headroom.

26.11.2025 10:44 ๐Ÿ‘ 4 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

1. Tax wealth fairly. ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ

We need politicians to have an honest conversation with us about taxes. It's clear they're going to need to rise and we'll all have to play our part - BUT it would be inexcusable for taxes to go up for ordinary people and not on the wealthiest.
