Almost certainly the predecessor the modern hook format, the gorge, usually simple needle or spile shape carved from bone or flint with an indent to fix a line. Found in range of archaeological contexts, baited and used on line to hook fish.

The exact date of their construction is hard to determine, but they do have some historical grounding; they were noted by Captain George Vancouver on his visit to the area in 1791 and by Lieutenant Parker King in 1818. Almost certainly dating them to the pre-contact period. 2/3
