Where before the pool of investors was larger but each investor had less money to work with, so despite these bets costing less 10-20yrs ago, those individual investors couldn't afford to take an investment as an immediate loss. To some degree these investments were also *their* livelihoods
Imo the reason for the shift is that these people now have so much money, and regulations are so lax there is no reason to throw good money at a lost bet because you can take the money you get from cutting your losses, pool it with larger, sketchier cash sources and make another bet instead
If the roll pays off you keep making bigger and bigger bets. The moment you lose you walk away and take people's livelihoods with you.
The investment meta since COVID sees actual investment (putting money in something and growing it over time) as too slow to satiate number-go-up ghouls and shifted to short-term bets where payoff is determined on a single roll. No surprise the money is now moving into literal betting markets.
Alternative take: they should do a fake remake and call it "Metroid 64 for Wii U Deluxe Nintendo Switch 2 Edition"
