Honestly, I am absolutely disgusted by academics suggesting that AI can do the reading and writing for you. At a certain point, what you're bragging about is fraud. And in a broader sense, what you're contributing to is the erosion of knowledge and the destruction of trust in academic publishing.

These AI bro (seems to always be bros) academics can't resist smugly announcing how mundane and unoriginal their research must be. For the record, there's zero chance AI could have done my PhD for me.

Hey fellow scientists, I'm just letting you know that if you're promoting something with some junky AI image, I'm not gonna click. You've got a workshop, a conference, a new paper?
Just not gonna bother. You want a bespoke image? Hire an illustrator.

This attitude was so widespread, I found myself adapting it too back in the day. To fit in the community? To be validated? But it's reflection of inexperience, anger and petty.

The amount of belittling, vitriol and arrogance I see from the community each time a palaeontology-adjecent media project shows up. Guys, you don't come off as intelligent by demeaning individual production members, you just prove you've no experience working in media, and come of as mean spirited.

You know palaeontology online spheres are dominated by men, with a big name being outed as a peado accomplice, the first thing they comment on are "I never agreed with his stance on T.rex" & "I preferred Bakker/Gould anyway"
And not "The field is rotten to the core with sex pests and weird men"

Fossil bryozoan under the microscope
I am becoming fascinated with encrusting organisms as microfossils and windows into ancient ecological interactions. Here we have a tiny bryozoan (I think) growing on a brachiopod shell over 300 million years ago. Collected from Alpena Michigan by yours truly.

Did you know, for every 7 men in palaeontology, there are ~3 women. Women make up 25-35% of global vertebrate palaeontological publishing output. And are most likely to study mammals, while men, reptiles.

Looking at the Progressive Palaeontology (UK based conference for early career palaeontologists) vertebrae attendees (2000 to 2008) were 31% female and 69% male. Only 31% of women who presented, are still in the field, in contrast to 82% male presenters.
