For my money, wireplay is all about that sensation of teetering on the edge - pulling the wire *nearly* out of its housing, feeling the sensations and control of your limb fading in and out, knowing that someone could completely disable you, piece by piece, just by *tugging*...
Doing that would require require replacing the wire (unless you're going for long-form sensation play with the possibility of grounding your wire against your case).
Okay, so the thing about wires vs nerves is that nerves have feeling all the way down, but wires don't- they're just transferring signal, so if you wanted to do something similar, you'd need to actually strip the wire - flay it, if you will
