It’s a pattern of wringing out the water from the rags, tracing over injury with a doctor’s care, and washing the rags once more in the pink water. He can feel Jayce’s gaze fall on him, and from the corner of his eye he can see the sheriff’s eyebrows furrow and his lips turn downward in a slight frown. “Jayce.” He says. “Tracked mud on your floors. Your couch,” Jayce doesn’t finish his sentence, and instead lets his eyes drop to where he sits. Mind at least aware; it’s good enough for Viktor at this moment. A hum. “You are worried about my couch? My floors?” He pauses his work then, and from there Jayce can see Viktor’s face clearly. An exhaustion that is rooted in something deeper than the physical. A worry and tiredness rooted in all of Viktor’s admiration for the man behind the badge. Viktor’s thumb runs across the centerline of Jayce’s palm and the humor from the question dies out like a suffocating ember. A laugh even, surprises Jayce. “In all my years, I think I know how to clean blood, my Sheriff.”

It was easier to pretend these weren’t his feelings, this retelling didn’t affect him. So that is what he would do.
