Wichita's sales tax discourse doesn't need to end with the vote. There are ways forward.
Post-sales-tax-election, The Journal is investigating solutions that Wichita could learn from to respond to its biggest challenges.
Plenty of analysis explains why the 1% sales tax failed. The Journal is focused on what comes next. Led by reporter @steflugli.bsky.social, this series explores real paths forward on the issues at the heart of the campaign.

With Juniper Arts, vulnerable kids get to be kids again
A Wichita nonprofit provides art and music classes to children in foster care and juvenile detention.
Art and music education is expensive, and youth residential facilities often lack resources beyond basic needs. Juniper Arts sends weekly instructors and volunteers to teach art and music, helping reignite childrenβs spirits and trust in adults.

Case study: Do neutral political forums have a future in Johnson County β and beyond?
Prairie Village is a place where people came to disagree so forcefully that they could not agree on what constituted neutral turf.
At a time when the fissures of polarization affect local governments more and more often, is any setting capable of being seen as holding neutral ground anymore?
