Congratulations to Mark Carney, on becoming the 24th Prime Minister of Canada today. My congratulations as well to all of my colleagues sworn into Cabinet, and in particular, to my successor at Justice, Gary Anandasangaree.

Working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis partners on the #IndigenousJusticeStrategy to build a more fair and equitable justice system has been one of my most meaningful accomplishments as Minister. Now that it’s published, our work together continues!

Today, we released the #IndigenousJusticeStrategy—a path forward co-developed with First Nations, Inuit, & Métis partners to address overrepresentation of Indigenous Peoples in the justice system, a product of the systemic racism rooted in Canada’s colonial legacy.

After today’s 11 appointments, our government has now appointed 234 judges since I became Minister—meaning 99% of vacancies filled. According to the data collected as of 2002, this is the lowest number of vacancies we’ve ever had!

Canada’s #BlackJusticeStrategy is a huge first step toward transformative action to combat anti-Black racism and discrimination faced by Black communities in Canada by not only addressing overrepresentation, but also the underlying socioeconomic factors that lead to it.
Today, we released Canada’s #BlackJusticeStrategy Implementation Plan—a 10-year phased plan to combat the anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination that leads to the overrepresentation of Black people in the criminal justice system, including as victims of crime.
La #StratégieEnMatièreDeJusticePourLesPersonnesNoires est un pas majeur vers une action transformative contre le racisme anti-Noir et la discrimination subie, en s'attaquant non seulement à la surreprésentation, mais aux facteurs socioéconomiques sous-jacents qui y contribuent.

Dunn House, a Parkdale housing project with health supports, opened last year. Those experiencing homelessness often have complex medical needs. Now, Dunn House is expanding health services beyond its walls to support more homeless Torontonians—amazing to see this growth!
