“If deep reading cultivates empathy,” Joel Halldorf writes, “the attention-fracturing, dopamine-hitting, scroll-spurring design of digital media often undermines it”:
THREAD: I’m going to share this thread here to clearly state my perspective on electric vehicles, car dependency and better cities, for all those who frequently ask me about it, including media, elected leaders and many others. Here goes. Please share it frequently if you think it will help. 🧵#EVS

Trump continues to light diplomatic capital on fire. My thread on this: bsky.app/profile/prof...
[We see a close up of a young white male, tanned, white teeth, coiffed hair clearly an influencer on social media. It is an image such as you see when social media posts are shown on the news. In the corner of the screen is named a location: DUBAI. He is staring slightly off-camera for several silent panels of the comic strip. His eyes move slightly. He is having a thought.] From off-screen a newsreader’s commentary comes: NEWSREADER: Extraordinary images here of an expat in Dubai [The influencer’s eybrows raise slightly] …Having their first ever geopolitical thought. [CUT TO a BBC news scene. The BBC newsreader CLIVE MYRIE is talking to an interviewee next to the screen showing the social media influencer’s face. The interviewee’s name is David Jones]. CLIVE MYRIE: To explain the significance of this moment we’re joined by David Jones, our Expat Thoughts correspondent DAVID JONES: Clive, this is momentous It was caught on film at the end of an Instagram post titled: ‘Dubai Is Brilliant’. [Pointing at the screen, the influencer’s expression still the same] You can clearly see in the eyebrows here, the dawning realisation that there *might* be something in the world beyond his dickhead self. It marks a *huge* departure from all the Dubai Expat’s previous thoughts. CLIVE MYRIE: Which are…? DAVID JONES: You've Got To Get Yourself Out Here Mate, Everything Is So Clean, I Don't Have To Pay Taxes, I Am Incurious As To Why I Do Not Have To Pay Taxes, and Spa. CLIVE MYRIE: And might we see an expansion of these new Thoughts in coming days? DAVID JONES: I think we can expect to see: “I Deserve To Be Airlifted By A Country I Pay No Tax To” CLIVE MYRIE: Mmm. CNN's Natasha Bertrand: "Officials acknowledged during a closed-door briefing Tuesday that Iran’s Shahed attack drones represent a major challenge + U.S. air defenses will not be able to intercept them all."
"Only one country has learned how to deal with Shahed drones at scale: Ukraine."
AWKWARD.
Billboard ad for public transit visible from a freeway filled with cars and congestion, that says “You are not stuck in traffic. You ARE traffic.”
One of the best of all time.
“You’re not stuck in traffic. You ARE traffic.”
Wish we had come up with that one. #UrbanTruth
I have just held a call with President Pedro Sánchez to express the EU’s full solidarity with Spain.
The EU will always ensure that the interests of its Member States are fully protected.
A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.

The new Reading 'warming stripes' double-decker electric bus came to campus today.
The bus is painted in the local warming stripes to start climate conversations throughout the town.
Tomorrow in the Commons: debate on cuts to FCDO – it faces the largest cuts of any department, especially in overseas development; Foreign Affairs Committee chair Dame Emily Thornberry warns staff cuts of 15–25% without a clear strategy are 'alarming' (h/t Hansard Society)
I learned a lot from my @brookings.edu colleagues here on the many implications of the Iran war. My own piece w/ O’Hanlon examines why the air campaign likely won’t produce democracy and stability.

As a long time fan of @economist.com going back to the last century, when James Callahan was PM (yes, that old!), it's a thrill to appear in print on their pages. Revised version of a web essay on the Supreme Court decision.
Authoritarian regimes are often undermined by low human capital among the people willing to work for them
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."
-Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953
If you think empathy is a bad thing, you’re almost certainly a bad person.
I think about this Tony Benn speech much more than I used to
A few more thoughts. USFP/natsec usually works from bottom up, even for prez-directed policies. Bureaucrats, mid-levels, political appointees work the problem, then top people bless it. Diplomacy (JCPOA) works like this. Military planning can move faster w/ prior plans, but similar. 1/

Given constraints on munitions & logistics, I expected US to launch limited Iran campaign. Trump has instead announced most expansive goals imaginable: regime change, destruction of conventional military + end of nuclear ambitions. Unclear how US will square this circle.

As a professional military strategist, I just wanted to make sure everyone has a full understanding of the American strategy in Iran, thank you for your attention to this matter
We've entered the stage of the news cycle where the clear initial information has been reported, fresh reporting is hours or days away, and the gap in between is full of talking heads either constantly re-stating the bleeding obvious and/or speculating wildly based on nothing.
