Excellent question! They do have other foods for example cereals are the second most popular crop grown by Humans and young children can eat those but of course it's not the perfect food and starvation is sadly a big problem (hence the dependency on the Hive)

She died at right around a thousand years old, and @khonri.com provided the Ford Explorer comparison. An SUV with jaws and insatiable appetite.

So, I leave it up to the reader. Are the Melipenati descendants of Earth hymenopteran species that evolved sentience, or are they extra terrestrials who happen to evolve parallel characteristics? Does it matter?

09.03.2026 16:32 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I leave it ambiguous if the Melipenati are even from Earth at all. They appeared in the collective memory after Human civilization had already collapsed and historical record keeping failed. Their own society has changed a lot, and the only person who remembers that far back can't talk about it 4/5

The workers spend 20 years growing from egg to adulthood and then hatch fully grown. The drones take 40 years to hatch, and the queens hatch at 15 years. The queens also live longer, up to a thousand years, and don't stop growing, spending all their days eating corpses and magical fast-gro food 3/5

Most of the bees are Human height or larger with mandibles that can sever limbs. They metabolize pollen, nectar, honey, and blood when it's available (lots of Humans incidentally become prey to bugs in this world).

They also live a really long time. Average lifespan of a worker bee is 200yrs 2/5

While bees obviously exist in our world, the ones starring in my story do not. The Melipenati are inspired by the Melipona, aka Mexican stingless bee, but they are very much their own thing.

For starters, they are giant. Atl the MC is 9ft tall, and he's not even the biggest 1/5

They often combine it with corn to make pozole, which is the most common food eaten by the Humans and corn is the most popular crop grown outside the Hive. Nectar and pollen are added as sweetener and protein respectively, since meat is extremely rare. When corn crops fail, they eat the paste only.

Honey is mixed with pollen to make a wet paste. This happens at facilities outside the Hive, because Humans participate in this part.

Nectar and pollen are transported by train to holding tanks where Human workers combine them to a desired consistency along with other ingredients 1/2

The DOJ released evidence, which the FBI deemed credible, that the President of the United States sexually and physically assaulted a 13 year old girl AND she was afraid to talk about it because Trump would kill herβ€”and it’s somehow not the biggest scandal in American history?

Describe your plot in five words or less:

Bee fucks man becomes god

Late to answer this but I think the problem is I don’t actually want *everyone* to read my work. I have no interest in being beloved by the masses and breaking into the mainstream is actually a worry that keeps me up at night. I want to be known only by a few people who give a shit.

The Melipenati capital was once a massive fort constructed to protect the aquifer beneath it, and it is connected to outposts all around it, the absolute best real estate for hundreds of miles. They took it and declared victory over the Humans, ending the Water Wars (for now)

08.03.2026 14:35 πŸ‘ 11 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The Great Water Wars were fought a few millennia before the events of the story. Water was so greatly depleted in North America that the former US went to war which eventually dissolved into many small regional wars around the collapsed nation, Humans vs Humans and Humans vs Bugs 1/2

That’s a good question. I’m kinda leaning towards β€œit’s a problem” and also centuries of heavy pollution have taken their toll so asthmatics and the elderly have an extremely hard time.

He knows which cacti are safe to eat or drink from and which are not. He knows about the greenhouse and that it's where the lifesaving honey food comes from, and he has heard the myth of the divine mission the bees claim. Most of the Humans disagree with the claim they destroyed the world.
