This is the book cover for Drs. H. Samy Alim and Geneva Smitherman's Articulate While Black: Barack Obama, Language, and Race in the U.S.
A6 4/5: Dr. Alim and Dr. Smithermanβs Articulate While Black: Barack Obama, Language, and Race in the U.S. is such a FUN and salient sociolinguistic read!
This is the cover for Dr. April Baker-Bell's Linguistic Justice: Black Language, Literacy, Identity, and Pedagogy which features an illustration of a small Black child whose mouth is being covered by a much larger hand, silencing them.
This is the cover for Dr. Geneva Smitherman's Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America. The cover features ordinary Black folks, some adults and some children. Two of the children are playing a clapping game together.
A6 5/5: Of course, read Dr. April Baker-Bellβs work on Anti-Black Linguistic Racism. But also read Dr. Smithermanβs classic 1977 Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America, which Dr. Baker-Bell draws and builds upon heavily in her 2020 monograph.
A6 3/5: This text synthesizes major debates (creolist/Anglicist origins) and also emphasizes that Black Language isnβt a monolith but differs based on gender, region, class, community!
This is the cover of Dr. Sonja Lanehart's text Language in African American Communities.
A6 2/5: I really love Dr. Lanehartβs Language in African American Communities. Itβs probably the text I would use as a great overview with students or pre-service/in-service teachers with its multimodal resources/references.
The art of the deal:
1. Make wild demands
2. Get nothing
3. Declare victory

Okay theyβre still voting on stuff. The Gaetz report is supposed to be released once voting is finished. Also, right on for passing the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act.
Pretty wild that Elonβs debut as president elect was to strip funding for pediatric cancer research from the spending bill, only to watch the Senate have to pass it as a standalone bill. His first move was to fuck over kids with cancer.
Those pesky democrats tricked us into helping people.
The key takeaway is that the worldβs richest man got what he wanted; stripped our cancer funding for kids, killed reforms to bring down drugs prices and caps on investment in China. Trump on the other hand demanded a debt ceiling raise and got nothing.
We are going to hear a lot over the next couple of years about how, despite controlling the White House, House, and Senate, Republicans just aren't able to get anything done because of Democrats
Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.
I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.
People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random.
Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for β¦ sleep apnea
The House on Friday passed a measure that funds the federal government through mid-March, temporarily extends farm programs and provides new disaster aid. The bill must be passed by the Senate and signed by President Biden before midnight to avoid a shutdown. Here's how each House member voted.
βWe confess that we are in bondage to sin and from our sin we cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed in what we have done and in what we have left undone.β
Bro I donβt know how you go to church but I been starting my Sundays with this for 42 yearsβ¦
Thanks to Marlyse Baptista and the Linguistic Society of America staff for pulling this event together so quickly. Another reason to be at the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
"We will forever be grateful for the unconditional time she gave to us, to all her literary children across the writerly world," said Kwame Alexander in the statement on the renowned Nikki Giovanniβs death
