Sven Harmeling, Head of Climate at CAN Europe: The ESABCC report outlines the critical importance of a just transition towards sustainable agriculture. This comes at a time when impacts are already severely affecting farmers and rural communities. The EU’s newly agreed 2040 climate target will also require the agricultural sector to contribute to the necessary emission reductions. Reducing and redirecting harmful subsidies, and scaling up support to enable a just transition for farmers and rural communities, are at the heart of the ESABCC recommendations. A socially-just greenhouse gas pricing mechanism in the agri-food system should also be considered, and can be instrumental in supporting the transition to a more resilient agriculture system.

The @esabcc.bsky.social has released a landmark report on EU agri-food, and its message is clear:

❌ Europe cannot meet climate goals without transforming agriculture

👩‍🌾 For CAN Europe, a just transition is essential: for farmers, rural communities and the climate!

Marine ecosystems, from coastal to deep sea, now show the influence of human actions, with coastal marine ecosystems showing both large historical losses of extent and condition as well as rapid ongoing declines.

Let’s act to restore what’s been lost. 🌊🌱
