Sadly the report still has him saying:

"It was an honour to see expert collectors taking these coins into their care"

Rather than:

"I enjoyed selling the coins for a lot of money to a group of wealthy anonymous buyers"

Must have been an honest slip of the tongue...

British Iron Age gold coins worth Β£33,000 sold to US collectors The collection was found in a field near Bury St Edmunds features distinctive horse designs

At least this records that folks were appalled by the sale...

It was reburied to save it from frost and rain (which were loosening tesserae) and souvenir hunters (who were taking bits home). Sadly, in 1903, it was thought that other options, like constructing a cover building or lifting it, were too expensive

The Blackfriars Pavement in the Jewry Wall Roman Experience. It was originally found in 1832. The Great Central Railway built a tiled chamber beneath the station where it was found. Interested observers could view the mosaic from above through a prismatic glass floor. Moved in 1970s. #MosaicMonday

My photo shows a Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. Octopus detail from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures, including the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish, at the women’s changing room at the Central Baths in Herculaneum.

A vintage photo of archaeologists in a trench. The are peeling a mosaic, which has been reinforced and stabilized by adhering fabric to its surface, off the soil, over a drum and onto a large board.

The mosaic was... erm... "carefully lifted" for conservation and ultimately re-laid in it's original location, where it can still be see today.

A lovely Roman mosaic showing floral motifs surrounded by a twisted guilloche border. Oh! And there's a fish! The colour scheme is white, black, grey and red.

This is where it started everyone!

Our "Floral Mosaic" was discovered in 1960 (don't ask how 😬😱). This led to 8 years of excavation during which the Palace was gradually revealed.

Three fragments of Roman mosaic. At top left, a leopard between two trees. At top right, a hound and a boar separated by a tree, with part of a rectangular compartment below; this shows a rosette with three birds to the right. At bottom, a small fragment with a bear.

On #MosaicMonday over the last few weeks, I've been paying tribute to the wonderful animals from the Withington Orpheus mosaic as depicted in Lysons's engravings. It was a great thrill to see the originals again last week, now displayed in the excellent Corinium Museum. 1/2

These Celtic coins - plated copies of Ambiani staters struck from the same dies - ended up buried together centuries later in a Roman ditch in Hertfordshire.

Recently another small group of plated staters turned up in a 1st-century ditch. A pattern emerging, or simply coincidence?

Kept them safe for future researchers, kept them on display for the public, kept them together as a find (not dispersed among private collections and never seen again). Archaeology should never, in our opinion, be for sale. Heritage is for everyone, not the privileged few
