Opinion: A step forward, miles to go: The truth about ending the province's spousal cap Rule cuts off people with disabilities from support if they have a working partner. Despite last week's change, the biggest barriers remain

"The government made a promise, and although it has taken a step forward, it still has several more steps to go." Spencer van Vloten, editor of BC Disability, has an OpEd in the Vancouver Sun that looks at the recent changes to the Persons With Disability Benefits

CFEโ€™s Listening Campaign 2025 found that low-income families are delaying or skipping vital health and mental health care because they canโ€™t afford out-of-pocket costs. Gaps in our public system are hurting their health, finances, and quality of life.

Gaps in our public health system make life even harder for families living in poverty. When care is unaffordable or delayed, it affects parentsโ€™ ability to work and care for their kids. Thatโ€™s why one of our new areas of focus is Health Equity.

Invisible disabilitiesโ€”like chronic pain or mental illnessโ€”make it harder for parents to access stable work and housing in systems not built for them. Many of our BC members live with these challenges and lead our work for disability justice.

In 1929, women were finally recognized as โ€œpersonsโ€ in Canadaโ€”but many, including Indigenous and racialized women, were excluded. Equity is still a fight. At CFE, we work to ensure all parents and caregivers, of all genders, have the rights and supports to thrive.
