Addendum: I think I learn more by re-reading stuff I wrote but didn’t like:
- “That headline too long.”
- “That headline could’ve been more descriptive.”
- “This concept doesn’t work.”
- “Who thought this was a good idea?”
The constant quest to be a little bit better today than I was yesterday.
Thinking about this got me thinking about something someone said about my writing that still sticks with me. It was something along the lines of “I get the sense of not just what it’s like to be a Bears fan, but what it’s like to be one with a unique perspective.” That still hits me in the soul.
In the end, what I like about reading my stuff is that I feel like I learn stuff about myself as a writer. And sometimes, person. That’s kinda the beauty in the written word. It can be a window into a world.
What makes the good stuff pop noticing stuff I don’t like:
- “This could have been written clearly.”
- “Oof. Whose idea was it to end a sentence with a preposition or adverb?”
- “This was not framed well at all.”
- “What was the point of this sentence?”
- “This paragraph coulda been a sentence.”
Thoughts I’ve had while reading my stuff:
- “I like the way this thought was framed.”
- “I like this post’s structure.”
- “The way you use images to break up long blocks of text makes this easier to read.”
- “Ooh, that’s a little inside baseball-y. Hope readers catch it.”
It was something that kinda popped in my mind recently. And my answer was yes. But also? It was more complex than just a simple yes. It wasn’t like “I like reading my stuff because it’s good.” I’m not that vain lol.
4 AM THOUGHTS: “Here’s a question I’d like to ask other writers over a drink — do you like reading your own stuff?”
I think it’s a fascinating question that could yield intriguing answers.
