The 2026 DMRC Summer School is officially underway!
With 72 delegates in attendance, today's sessions explored a diverse range of topics with the highlight being a keynote address by Nina Jankowicz, internationally-recognized expert on disinformation and democratization.
Thank you, Kateryna! It was nice that you joined and shared your perspective! π
Inspiring talks by @ninajankowicz.com and @ahrabhikat.bsky.social (on attacks towards academics and activists and bias in computational social science, respectively) were my highlights for the day #dmrcss26
π Save the Date!
If you're considering joining us, now is a great time to block the dates and start planning your #trip.
We canβt wait to see you at the SU School for Data Science and Computational Thinking in Stellenbosch on 3rd and 4th June 2026 for this year's #Hackathon! πβ¨
Weβre excited to share that #hackica26 on June 3 & 4 will be hosted at the SU School for Data Science and Computational Thinking! Huge thanks for welcoming us π«ΆπΏπ¦

Submissions to COMPTEXT 2026 close tomorrow!
Showcase your text-, image-, and video-as-data research, get useful feedback, join the training workshops, and connect with like-minded researchers at our social events in Birmingham. See you there!
Conference update: IC2S2 Virtual Day. While Vermont is an incredibly kind and welcoming state, national policies and federal actions have a real impact on conference access, particularly for people from countries who cannot enter the US due to federally enacted travel bans. 1/6
Great opportunity to work on an important project #commsky
Four days to sign up for the @qutdmrc.bsky.social Summer School 2016! I'm happy to host a workshop with the title "Biased by Design? Unpacking Social Bias in CSS". We will explore how social bias might impact participants' CSS projects and how we can deal with it! π€π
Congrats! Great news π
Drawing on existing literature, we discuss these dimensions and examine how social bias can be detected within CSS, as well as how CSS can be used to study social bias in society. We also outline ways to mitigate social bias to move forward. π
Preprint alert! π₯³
How are social bias and CSS interconnected? π€
@aytalina.bsky.social, @janabernhard.bsky.social, @valeriehase.bsky.social, and I argue that social bias shapes CSS as a field and as a methodology. Progress in CSS depends on engaging with both dimensions! osf.io/preprints/so...
In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

Today I discussed academic freedom (and the role of research infrastructure). Thanks to the team at @cais-research.bsky.social for hosting this event!
There is one week left to apply to join us at Rutgers! We're hiring an Assistant Professor in Computational Sociology as part of a cluster of new hires in data science and AI.
Applications are due next Wednesday, 10/15.
What are threats to academic freedom, and what can we do to strengthen it?
We will explore these questions with Ina Brandes (NRW), @kwelle.bsky.social (GESIS), Manfred Bayer (TU Dortmund), and Tim Majchrzak (CAIS) at the panel that I am hosting this Friday π
