It really amazes me that so many people believe in souls. I think even non-religious people believe in them. It's something that is so fundamentally assumed that barely anyone questions it.

I agree with all of this, but you said one thing which isn't true, which is that he wasn't in danger. The fact he tried to move out of the way AND STILL GOT HIT is proof that he was in danger.
Obviously a woman's life is not worth a broken leg. There are so many reasons shooting a moving vehicle is idiotic. My gripe is with everyone lying about the facts of the event.
