A reminder to keep your cats inside!

(Side note for Lethbridge: outdoor cats not only kill birds and ground squirrels, they can get killed by coyotes and owls)

Bird protection is a shared responsibility and everyone, including #cat owners, veterinarians, animal shelters, and municipalities, can play a role.

Keeping cats indoors protects wildlife and keeps cats safe by eliminating dangers such as cars, predators, and disease.

Avian Conservation and Ecology: An updated estimate of the number of birds killed by outdoor cats in Canada Domestic cats, Felis catus, can be found almost everywhere in the world and estimating their impact on wildlife, including birds, requires the most up-to-date information. There are an estima...

The findings from our study ace-eco.org/vol20/iss2/a... are 71% lower than estimates published in 2013.

This lower estimate does NOT reflect a reduction in cat predation but is due to more and improved data on cat predation rates and cat abundances.

Our team has published a new study in Avian Conservation Ecology showing that #cats kill between 19–197 million #birds each year in Canada!

In the time it has taken you to read ~3 posts (1 min) 114 birds have been killed at the paws of cats in Canada.

Study Pinpoints Number of Birds Killed by Cats Each Year It’s no secret that birds are facing many threats in our cities, but the leading cause of death may come as a surprise. It’s not avian flu or natural predators, but instead, outdoor cats.

How many birds are killed by cats each year?

A new #UofG study provides a more accurate picture of the millions of birds dying at the claws of household pets.

Please welcome conservation ornithologist @gowelizabeth.bsky.social to Bluesky! πŸ§ͺ

One time I had a bird question and texted it to her, but hadn’t told her my new number. She answered the question immediately and then said β€œand by the way who is this?”
