Today we celebrate Bulgarian Liberation Day.
This special day comes after the traditional start of spring in Bulgaria, 'Baba Marta', a time of renewal and growth.
Честит Ден на Освобождението! 🇧🇬
The Washington Post sacked all of its Middle East correspondents a couple of weeks ago. Useful.
EU's Kaja Kallas: “I have spoken to Israel’s Foreign Minister Saar and other ministers in the region. The EU is also coordinating closely with Arab partners to explore diplomatic paths.”
Europe faces a “geopolitical and geo-economic state of emergency” Macron told us, and will be “swept aside” if it does not reform. After its “Greenland moment”, Europe can’t go on as before. The US is “openly hostile” to Europe and wants it “dismembered”

“We need all the poison to come out.”
Labour MPs have warned that Keir Starmer’s days as prime minister are numbered after a day of fury over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador despite his friendship with Jeffery Epstein.

lizzie johnson @lizziejohnsonnn · 49m I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated. Quote lizzie johnson @lizziejohnsonnn · Jan 25 Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp.

Tech tensions continue rising: the Spanish government has accused Pavel Durov of using his "unrestricted control" of Telegram to send a message full of "lies and illegitimate attacks" to all Spanish users of the app.

The very same people ordering untrained federal agents to shoot at protesters have very strong thoughts about how Europe should be run.
Maybe they should think less about Europe and more about Minnesota.

Denmark's analysis and the assessment of other European capitals consistent
This crisis isn't about Denmark or Greenland per se - but something much more fundamental
The ability of big countries to grab the territory of smaller ones with impunity
For this post to be about the United States and not Russia shows that there has been an absolute diplomatic revolution.
Meanwhile, a source close to the Elysée says the American approach “raises questions about the validity” of the EU-US trade deal concluded last year.
“The President of the Republic is working to coordinate the European response to the unacceptable tariff threats made by President Trump.
He will be in contact with his European counterparts throughout the day and will request, on behalf of France, the activation of the Anti-Coercion Instrument.”
🚨 Just in: Emmanuel Macron demands the activation of the Anti-Coercion Instrument in response to Trump’s 10% tariff announcement, l’Elysée confirms.
Joint statement by the eight European countries targeted by Trump’s 10% tariff: 🇩🇰🇫🇮🇫🇷🇩🇪🇳🇱🇳🇴🇸🇪🇬🇧
“Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.”
Macron now refers to "intimidation or threat", explicitly comparing US behaviour in Greenland to Russia's approach to Ukraine. Sweden's PM says: "We will not allow ourselves to be blackmailed". Much, tougher language from Europeans than we have seen before, responding to the US escalation.
We should know by now not to respond to one of Trump’s weekend posts as a definitive statement of policy. The content is as outrageous as it is absurd. For that reason there will be strong pushback from markets, Congress, perhaps Supreme Court as well as European governments.
The whole situation is so mental we’ve lost sight of the basics. As @jakubkrupa.bsky.social rightly pointed out: Denmark is basically being threatened with tariffs for moving troops on its own territory 😳
Now it's really done: the liberals of Renew Europe joins the EPP and the Socialists to delay the ratification of the EU-US trade deal. The three centrist parties have a majority in the chamber to make it happen.
The European Parliament is NOT voting this deal.
An extraordinary meeting of EU ambassadors has been called for tomorrow afternoon in Brussels following the recent announcement by the U.S. of tariffs on EU countries over Greenland, a spokesperson for the current EU Council presidency held by Cyprus confirmed
EU US trade deal likely to be paused by European parliament on Wednesday with EPP and S&D both saying it cannot be approved now.
