π¨There's a new episode of The Northern Agenda's Our Kids In The North podcast
@anniegouk.bsky.social and I focus on the North East and ask the question: will creating high-skilled jobs solve the region's child poverty crisis?
Featuring Labour mayor @kimmcguinness.bsky.social

Great to be back in the studio with @robparsonsna.bsky.social doing some recording for a new series of @thenorthernagenda.bsky.social podcast! Watch this space π
Congrats to my colleagues @dubasfisher.bsky.social, @richardceault.bsky.social, @pdgallagher.bsky.social and Cullen Willis who were highly commended in the Innovation category at the @pressgazette.co.uk #BritishJournalismAwards last night π
The annual report from Shelter on the number of people who will be homeless this Christmas is stark reading - at least 354,000 people in England, including 161,500 children, will spend the holidays without a home. I've mapped the local figures below π

Secondary school GCSE performance figures were released this morning.
Find out how your children's secondary school is faring by using our interactive here: www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...
For #InternationalDayOfPersonswithDisabilities, my colleague @richardceault.bsky.social found thousands of disabled people in the UK could be eligible for benefits without even knowing it - with fewer than half claiming in some parts of the country

Some interesting data out today from @centreforcities.bsky.social, suggesting Labour are going to miss their 2029 housebuilding target by at least 388,000 homes. The shortfall is forecast to be largest in big metropolitan areas - I've mapped the figures at a local level below π

Very good π
Great data graphic by my colleague Marianna Longo on the average cost of Christmas dinner. How much are you going to be spending this year?
#dataviz #Christmas
There were a record 159,380 children living in temporary accommodation in England between April and June 2024.
A total of 5,910 households with children were living in B&Bs, 3,770 of which had been there for over the 6-week limit. Back in 2010, just 160 families stayed over that limit
NEW: The number of homeless children living in temporary accommodation in England has risen AGAIN to 159,380 - up 15% in a year.
Transient lives in temporary homes, defined by uncertainly, doing untold damage.
It is a scandal. But itβs not new. And itβs not going away.
Yaaay, well done! π
But what makes this project special is that it goes way beyond the data to show the humans behind the stats, with amazing reporting and frankly fantastic photography from the MyLondon team (as well as site design by @renduh.bsky.social). I encourage you to read it in full!
The data speaks for itself - figures from CHAIN show rough sleeping has more than doubled over the last 10 years, and the number of people dying while homeless has also been on the rise
Very proud to have been involved in this special project by MyLondon on the rise of rough sleeping in the capital - it's an incredible piece of work that really brings to life the stories behind the current homelessness crisis

Please also enjoy this outtake, where I look like Iβm trying some stand-up material. βData? I hardly know her!β Ba dum tss
It was great to speak to students at @sheffielduni.bsky.social about #datajournalism yesterday - hopefully inspiring the next generation of data nerds!
Eddie Crouch, chair of @thebda.bsky.social said: "Until the new Government keep their promises, millions will face long hours on the phone, struggling to access care." The Mirror has launched the Dentists for All campaign with the BDA - you can sign here:
We built an interactive map, which is automatically updated daily, that lets you search by postcode to find dental practices near you that are accepting new NHS patients
#ddj #datajournalism #dataviz
My latest investigation for @mirror.co.uk looks at England's dental crisis, with an estimated 96% of practices not taking on new adult NHS patients. One practice we contacted stated its waiting list was βat least ten yearsβ
Thank you!
Thank you Joe - I'll try for something more upbeat next time, but unfortunately a lot of my investigations focus on social injustice so they're quite depressing π
I'm so sorry to hear that - thank you for sharing!
I've been on here a while without actually posting anything, so I figure I should finally get round to sharing some of my work. First up, this major project I worked on with @liamthorp.bsky.social for @liverpoolecho.co.uk, revealing the devastating impact of austerity in Liverpool
