The morning of the second of March. Five and twenty past eight. "I'm terribly sorry to call so early," said the Dragon of Kensington Church Street to Old Fox, "just wanted to wish you a happy St David's Day for yesterday! I quite forget, I'm ashamed to say. May I make a toast over the telephone? I'm drinking a very nice cup of tea as I speak." Old Fox made the necessary salutations and soothing phrases β "quite alright," "no bother at all!" "I believe the Bishop would enjoy an extra day!" β and together, one in a warm, book-lined study in a Dorset cottage, the other in a rather smart sitting room in a London flat, they toasted Saint David and his mother, Saint Non, and her mother and grandmother before her, and then they settled down to a very enjoyable catch-up, as the first warm sun of the year streamed in and the first daffodils nodded in park and field.
Snowdrops, a painting by Ellen Che.
Every year at Candlemas, great drifts of snow-drops bloomed across Old Fox's village; miraculous, unadorned, pilt into the pale February sunlight from the dark, moleish earth below. In the churchyard around the graves and by the yew trees, across the green, in cottage gardens and under wayside oaks,
It was Candlemas, the very ebb of the day, & in his ramshackle cottage at the edge of the sea-cliffs, a mile or so from Old Fox's lane, the Stoat was about to have his tea. While the kettle began to slowly rattle over the fire, he took a new candle from the candle-box, ground it into a pewter candlestick & with a rather shaky paw, lit it with a taper from the stove. He then put it carefully on the sill of the bow-window with the buckled glass and the light flared in the dusk, strong as a ship's lantern, bright as the gold in the twilit, kirning waves below.

Halsin and Winnie the Pooh sat on a log mid conversation.
My heart is still so full to bursting from seeing thisβ¦
It was a grey Plough Monday, but the air was sweet with birdsong and the farmers from every farm around the village and the hamlet had paid their visits to the cottage. They bade Old Fox a solemn good morning & winked at Wolf, and left pouches of coins, cleaned in vinegar and polished to a dull shine, and generous withy baskets of green winter cheese and floury loaves and fruit cakes and marmalade and cider, so that Old Fox might open up the church that morning & keep the thin gold plough-lights burning to bless their ploughs and their horses and the furrows and the ridges of the long year ahead. Images: A fox's noble face, flecked with snow; seagulls chase a plough in a C.F.Tunnicliffe woodcut; a 1930s black and white photograph of ploughing from the Brecon Museum archives.
Sunlight falls on deep snow by a winding brook
A fox's profile silhouetted against the darkness.
Lit candles in silver holders decorate the branches of a Christmas tree.
That dusk, in the dark drawing room, Old Fox lit the beeswax candles on the spruce tree for the last time & the ghosts of the past & of those yet to come stepped forward, held in their spun-gold for a brief weighted moment, for the end of Yuletide is leaden with time, with the fugacity of all things
Just a warning: Pancake Day is in March this year. Doesnβt feel right. Doesnβt feel right at all.
Tiny bit of frost on the pavement
Pretty snowed in here. Guess Iβll just have to cancel all plans and stay on the sofa this weekend. #arcticblast
