Emergency Managers: Help ProPublica Prepare to Report on the Next Disaster If you are a part of the network of disaster response and recovery partners, we need your help to build a comprehensive picture of the real conditions across the country.

We know that emergency managers are critically important but arenโ€™t often thought about until after tragedy strikes.

We are building a source network to fuel in-depth coverage of the nationโ€™s emergency preparedness.

Love this graphic! But I wanted to point out that a lot of FEMA P-361 and ICC 500 safe rooms ARE gymnasiums at community centers or at schools. The advice on large open rooms not being very safe is great, but it might be better to use another example??

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

$1 billion in storm damage; financial donations 'badly needed,' St. Louis mayor says St. Louisans, particularly in north city, were facing the daunting task of recovery from the storm's devastation, many without power and few resources.

One of the largest metropolitan cities is having to beg for donations because FEMA is non-existent, thanks to Trump who's busy golfing today.

Hurricane season starts next week.

How The 2025 St. Louis Tornado Compares To A Historic One In 1896 An EF3 tornado was on the ground in St. Louis for at least 8 miles with a path up to a mile wide. How does it compare to the Great Tornado of 1896?

The St. Louis Tornado of 1896 still ranks as the 3rd deadliest tornado in U.S. history. My breakdown of this week's tornado in St. Louis and how it compares to that one. And why such a difference in fatality numbers. Hint: Thank you NWS.

St. Louis mayor says authorities have confirmed at least 4 deaths after severe storm damaged city At least four people died and others were hurt after severe storms including a possible tornado swept through St. Louis.

Looks like the tornado and/or parent circulation passed across the dense near-NW parts of St. Louis. Lots of tree and roof damage evident, w/some at-least-partial structure collapses. The St. Louis area is highly tornado-vulnerable: an 1896 twister caused 255 deaths.
