Is it common in Montréal et Québec City to loan personal vehicles to friends? That's an interesting cultural practice, if so!
(Or is it more likely something good friends do for each other, but not a general, societal practice?)

Tactical urbanist thinking at it's finest
We love Communato! Some of our members use it regularly. Doesn't jive with getting to the mountains for a long weekend, but car rental works in that space.
Of course, we'd prefer to take the train to Jasper, Banff, Churchill, Whitehorse, Yellowknife...(IF ONLY WE HAD ONE @mark-carney.bsky.social ).
So, we're curious re: Montréalers & VilleDeQuébequers living car-free, & regional transit vs rental car use?
In Alberta, it`s often said that the car/truck/wankpanzer is necessary for going camping, hunting, hiking, skiing, etc. How does that compare to getting-out-of-town transport for Québequers?
We're inspired by families like @mommypedals.bsky.social, @realdocbrown.bsky.social or @jkparker.bsky.social who use cargobikes & e-bikes to move thru the city (core & 'burbs) as families, 90% of the time. But without better public & regional transit, car-lite is the reasonable option & that's ok.
We are indeed planning to point out bike lock-ups' inconsistency & undependability (eg: NAIT & Canadian Tire have some, but the Seniors Centre, the mall, don't). BTW: we often use Google Maps reviews to tell businesses they need bike parking. Also, do you know re: the Yeg bike parking map project?
Yes, seen it, & appreciate your positivity!
Have you seen this? www.caa.ca/driving-safe...
We are honoured to associated with them! They teach the right thing and that responsibility lies with pedestrians, cyclists, and motorized vehicles. Sorry, we're just not the negative type and had to really think of a kind response.
What a wonderful project, Sean!!
Tell us the logistics? From the background, it looks like most were taken at the same spot, on the same day?
And was the frame added later, or was it part of the original shot?
Do you have names, contact details for them now? Are they still winterbiking?
Cyclists clear snow from Comm. Ave. bike lanes after storm, call on city for accountability #news

On Saturday, we will be testing the YEG ward with the best bike infrastructure (so far) to see if one can ride between places in the ward that women need to go: schools, hardware stores, groceries, clinics, malls, LRT stations, cafes, seniors centre, City Hall & a college (spoiler: answer is no).
Now, if they would just ensure that every driver they teach and every driver they insure learns that cyclists are legal and legitimate users of roads, that roads are not paid for by licence fees, and that tailgating, coal-rolling, near-swiping or cat-calling cyclists is unlawful, we'd be way ahead.

Winter Bike to Work Day is a fabulous opportunity to use whimsy and glamour to bust certain gendered stereotypes about who cycles and remind municipalities that #WomenRideBikes, women, girls and gender-diverse people ride #AllSeasons, all weathers.
Happy February 13th, cycle-sisters!

Edmonton's bike network planning team investigated material to colour bike lanes, but were told there's a shortage, putting the cost up. With a tight budget, even knowing better visibility= safer, the city opted to create infrastructure first & add 'aesthetics' later.

Who was the brilliant woman who DIY'd this?
Screenshot of the top page of the article. Includes the title: "Exploring the causal effects of bicycling for transportation on mental Health", authors: Liang Ma et al, and abstract.
3+ days a week. Commute by bike 3+ days a week for better life satisfaction & mental health. Neighbourhood doesn't matter. Weekend spurts don't cut it.
It's a good study: sample size, design, propensity score methods = ✅✅✅.
Municipalities & provinces take note!

The next ride along with an elected representative is January 16th, with Councillor Keren Tang. If you live in her ward (Karhiio) and would like to join, please let us know!
🙏🏼 to newly elected @jonmorganyeg.bsky.social for agreeing to experience a slice of a day-in-the-life of a parent living car-free in Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi, Edmonton. It wasn't the nicest day for a bike ride, but he rode with us, & asked good questions!

In October we invited all the newly elected councillors of Edmonton to experience the city's infrastructure as women using active transportation.
Yesterday, we rode with Councillor Morgan. The route was snirt, crud + slush; the light flat, wind clammy. But he paid attention, asked good questions🙏🏼
In the city of Edmonton, a series of snowfalls, thaws & freezing rains prior to & over the holiday break led to numerous complaints about the snow & ice crews doing good things very badly, & privileging drivers over everyone else.

There was a dramatic moment, mid-December, when the City of Guelph voted to not plow snow from the #bike lanes! But Guelph's Bike Mayor mobilized the community, a letter campaign & a critical mass, with success!

We've had a great break, chilling with family & friends, over food, libations, puzzles, knitting, Lego, jenga, etc.
We've also been busy, showing women how to dress for cycling in -20s, & advocating for safer, more welcoming infrastructure & it's *all-season maintenance* (AKA snow & ice clearing).
Maybe you see my #PlowSidewalksToo hashtag and think, "Yeah, sure, sounds great but it would require a massive tax increase and expansion of the public payroll and no one is going to willingly sign on for that. Real shame, though."
So: a thread. 🧵

Massive 🇺🇸 pick-up trucks are already squeezing onto our streets. But EU-US trade talks could open the floodgates.
Here’s why "Mutual Recognition" is a disaster for road safety. 🧵
