It was something he always had to be careful with. Humans, with their fragile bodies, could never take the brunt of his wrath, nor would they deserve to. But Nai is no human. He's an abomination, just like him — they're the two halves of God's greatest atrocity. And they bring out the absolute worst in each other.

Taped in place is a piece of paper with a writing excerpt. “Next time,” Vash says slowly, eyes watching his own fingers wrap the last of the bandages around Wolfwood's wrist, “ask me. I'll take care of you.” “It's rotten work,” Wolfwood replies, exhaling deeply. The smoke dances in the dying light coming through the tiny window, swirling and floating before it completely dissipates. It's not completely gone, just invisible to the naked eye. He wonders if he was referring to taking care of his injuries, or to himself. But Vash takes it in stride, like he always does. He smiles and says, “Not to me.”

He has to believe he’ll see him again, that the tank will take him wherever Nico was stolen off to, that past the pain and push-ups, all his persistence will pay off in their eventual reunion, somewhere without hard bloodstained floors and harsh interior light, another place with an open sky instead of a skyscraper’s obfuscated innards, where any smoke he smells is a source of reassurance instead of trepidation, a reminder of his newfound home as opposed to homesickness, where the suffering will all have been worthwhile if it means he’ll have him back. He has to catch up.

As soon as it leaves his lips, it registers as the most intimate thing he's ever said to Vash. Instead of wanting to take it back, he's glad he got it out. It's the truth, after all, and has been since... well, probably since the first time he saw Vash's real smile. For a moment, he thinks Vash has him figured out, his heart torn from his chest to beat openly in Vash's hands, since the first thing Vash does is kiss him, hitched deep with desperation.
