Believes communication should be private by default and worries about surveillance-supported threats to the First and Fourth Amendment. Professor of Computer Science, Oregon State University Public Voices Fellow, theopedproject.org Opinions my own.

How does this jive with not-SOSA/SOPA because social media companies want to be treated (legally) more like phone lines than newspapers, in terms of liability of content?

That's 10-60 protesters per cop at the 2004 RNC protests compared to 2 cops per protester at the 2024 DNC protests.

I'm going to leave this without commentary ... for now ...

So, I guess to say that a similar scale of response in both cases. However, between 120,000 and 800,000 participated in the 2004 RNC protests while between 4,000 and 6,000 participated in the 2024 DNC protests.

2004 Republican National Convention protest activity - Wikipedia

I was curious how this compares to other NC protests by cop count. CPD (~11,000 cops - probably a vast majority assigned to the DNC given the OT clocked) brought in 1200 extras. The 2004 RNC protests in NYC had 12,000 NYPD cops reporting per day.

Police arresting students for civil disobedience should not be on the experiential learning menu at universities.

The Fight Against Fascism Starts on Campus | Common Dreams Colleges are ahead of the curve when it comes to surveillance creep, and the ivory panopticon will only get worse as surveillance technologies get more advanced.

After a year of university overreaction to campus protest, will students feel safe in expressing their ideas that push the boundaries of their institution with complete surveillance of their activities?
