A lovely summery illustration by Shay Stenback showing a downy loon chick being fed by its parents. Text includes the Birds Canada Logo, Canadian Lakes Loon Survey 2025 and the start of the volunteer letter.
And the 2025 Canadian Lakes Loon Survey begins!
There are approximately 2 million lakes in Canada. Chances are you can find one where you can enjoy the lake and monitor loons.

No worries! If you aren't yet, I would recommend uploading to iNaturalist as it can give suggestions for identification. I use it to help with my mushroom IDs so I know that the mushroom called The Sickener is probably not one I should touch
That looks like a Tricolored Bumble Bee, also known as Orange-belted. The rusty part on the Rusty-patched Bumble Bee is only in the centre section on the second abdomen segment.
Even with Global Big Day over, my friends and I are still going to be raising money for Birds Canada. We'll be doing a redo Big Day later in the both. #birds #birdathon #conservation
A very wet birder wearing a soggy black raincoat with the hood up and a toque; standing in front of a forest. A pair of binoculars are in the bottom right of the photo.
On the left side of the table, an everything bagel sandwich with egg, ham, tomato, and spinach on a plate. On the right side of the table, a coffee mug. A window with a dreary sky is in the background
Highlight of the day was a Great Crested Flycatcher but the forest was pretty quiet. The birds had more sense than me to be out and about in the cold (3 C) and the rain. Post-birding bagel and coffee was definitely needed! #birds #globalbigday #birdathon #birding
A screenshot from the Weather Network should the morning, afternoon, evening, and overnight forecast for a Saturday. It will be raining all day
Ya know, I just want one year where I do a Global Big Day and the weather isn't crap. Looks like a soggy morning for me! #birds #globalbigday #conservation #weather #rain
As part of Global Big Day this year, I'm participating in Birds Canada's Birdathon to raise money for bird conservation. If you are able to, please donate to a great cause! #birds #newbrunswick #conservation #birding #canada

Current polls suggest support for the conservatives and liberals when combined, is likely to breach 80% of the vote in what many consider the most consequential election of their lifetime.β #VOTE
No matter what polls say, this Canadian election could be VERY close.
Donβt be overconfident, apathetic, or unstrategic, like too many were in the United States.
Look how that turned out for them. And for the world.
TURNOUT WINS ELECTIONS.
2 more advance voting days.
Make Mark Carney our PM.
Canadiansβ¦ please vote! Every vote for the Liberal Party is crucial. Donβt think βoh, weβre ahead in the polls, I donβt need to voteβ. Those are the votes that will get us ahead by a higher margin. If weβre not ahead by much they might just get us past the line for a win!! Please please please! π

I had a long wait yesterday morning cause they were still getting themselves up and running. Glad they brought more chairs for people to sit.
A traditional drawing with three birds (Goldcrest, Firecrest, and Palla's Leaf Warbler) perched on a coniferous branch with a lighthouse in the background. The lighthouse has a red top and a black stripe in the middle.
It's done. Goldcrest, Firecrest, and Palla's Leaf Warbler. Still find drawing conifers a pain in the tuchus #birds #art
Long line in Fredericton yesterday and I got there 9:30 am. My parents voted and said they struggled to get their ballots into the box because it was so full
I urge all Canadians age 18 and over, to vote this time. Don't sit at home there is too much at stake, like our democracy. Take the time over the holiday weekend, learn the facts, do your homework and get out and vote. via #RickMercer
Work in progress drawing of three birds (Goldcrest, Firecrest, and Pallas's Leaf Warbler) sitting on some coniferoud twigs with a lighthouse in the background
Ya know, I really don't like drawing conifer branches. #birds
Even in Canada, when I tell people about everything we had to submit for my partner's PR, they are genuinely shocked.
