And it might be worse to not fight, to feel as if there was something left unsaid, to not give it your best shot. I would know. Aversion to conflict can have its downsides, too. But often it’s going down fighting that we want most. What if there was something more. But what if you said too much?
There is also a desire, perhaps, to fight for the thing, the relationship, even when it is beyond saving. Do not go gentle into that good night and whatnot. “Do not let us go.” “Do not let this go without a fight,” bc that would mean perhaps you didn’t care about it. To fight is to show you cared.
Arguments are sometimes just an alternative to acknowledging the inevitable. you hurt me, i hurt you, now we can part ways feeling justified in our abandonment of the relationship, when all along we were simply incompatible, and could have gone peacefully. Sometimes an argument is easier.

The concept of a meritocracy or anything capitalistic or darwinistic and inherently competitive in nature is really funny to me because it completely ignores the fact that everyone goes through extremely tough times and at one point or another will be down and hurting.
