➡️ Emerging consensus on some feminist positions in the mainstream provokes backlash by antiegalitarian actors. They do not build new information ecologies as they can draw on already existing inequality regimes. Thus, they are not really "counter"!
➡️Emancipative and antiegalitarian "counterpublics" establish counterpublicity in digital spaces in different ways. Emancipative media build autonomous information ecologies to foster knowledge supportive of the transformation of unequal gender & sexuality regimes
4️⃣ Information Ecologies: Right-wing & masculist media connect to the mainstream public sphere, but mainly through oppositional references. Feminist media connect to the mainstream public sphere as well, but simultaneously build own distinct information ecologies at the margins.
3️⃣ Referencing: Feminist media show a wide variety in their referencing, connecting both to the mainstream public sphere & distinct information sources. Antiegalitarian CP media mainly refer to the mainstream public sphere, but these references are negative & express opposition.
2️⃣ Positioning: Mainstream media predominantly use arguments in favor of gender & sexual equality, while radical right, masculist and religious fundamentalist media focus on oppositional arguments.
1️⃣ Issue focus: Antiegalitarian far-right and masculist media behave reactively in following mainstream media’s issue focus. Feminist media show an autonomous relation to mainstream media as they set a distinct issue focus in focusing on gender roles and LGBTQIA* rights.
I look at the epistemic dimension of current struggles over gender issues by analyzing how 16 different emancipative / antiegalitarian counterpublic media, and mainstream media, represent and produce gender knowledge on 4 dimensions at the level of news content.
