✨ 130 years of Austrian Ephesos Excavations: In 2019, archaeologists uncovered a Byzantine commercial and dining district at Domitian's Square. The area was abruptly destroyed in 614/615 AD, preserving household items under a thick layer of ash, offering a rare glimpse into ancient life.

1962-1985, Terrace House 2, a building complex with luxury flats in the heart of the antique city, was unearthed. To allow visitors to marvel at the unique painting and mosaic decoration in place, a protective roof was erected by the OeAI in 1999/2000.

In the 50s, the first buildings (e.g. Temple of Hadrian, Basilica of St John) were re-erected. In 1978, the re-erection of the Celsus Library - today a famous selfie motive - was completed after almost 10 years of work.

Today, Ephesos is the most visited archaeological site in Türkiye. Around 4 million people visit the antique ruins every year. Since 2015, the site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Even in the early years, archaeologists made sensational finds, such as the Parthian Monument. It was erected in the early years of the reign of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius in the 2nd cent. AD and is now exhibited in the Ephesos Museum/KHM in Vienna.

1896, an expedition house is built in nearby Selçuk. It still serves as a base for the excavation team today consisting of an average of 200 scientists and 30-40 workers per year.

Ephesos offers scientists the unique opportunity to explore a city that was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Numerous research projects are therefore carried out together with national & international research institutions.

On 20 May 1895, the archaeologist O. Benndorf started an excavation in the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, on behalf of the Austrian Emperor. With kind permission of Türkiye archaeological work has continued for 130 years.
