Idk man. It sucks but I also want to someday make writing my job. And it seems like the only way to do that is by abandoning my own language
I have considered translating my manuscripts, which keep getting rejected in Spain, to English because anglo books are seen as inherently better, more interesting. Even in Spain, anglo authors are treated as the default in many writing circles
Since I'm talking about it- I've been thinking a lot about this dichotomy of like... Being a non-anglo author from a non-anglo country whose stories are set in non-anglo cultures, but who's cuttently writing tho stoties in English because, at the end of the day, that's the only way to get noticed
I say this as a Spanish author who writes in Spanish. Our publsihing landscape sucks ass because publishers would rather translate any book that comes out of the US than invest in Spanish fiction. I'm actively trying to read more books that do not come from the US to try to offset this even a little
I swear I mean this as nicely as possible but if a book was published in the US by a US publsihing company that's an American book even if it's set in another country and even if the author wasn't born in the US
