Extraordinarily grateful for @nycspeakeradams.bsky.social leadership to get us here. We're one step closer to a little more housing in every neighborhood!
Thatβs on top of baseline. So that plus the FAR repeal gets NYC structurally up from about 200k a decade to about 275-280k. Thatβs a 40% increase before the one-shot office conversions. Itβs not enough, but itβs also the biggest boost in ~60 years.
Lotta hot takes on that other website today, so another sign to spend more time here instead π
Getting 75% of a citywide housing plan through the Council in the first big citywide housing fight is not nothing β bsky.app/profile/nick...
IMO: Removal of parking mins for any development under ~R7ish is a pretty bfd.
Join us tomorrow to say YES to more housing and dense, walkable neighborhoods in City of Yes!
Personally, I think living above a pizza place would be dangerous for my health β but overall, a decent idea.
Tweet from Geoffrey Thomas: One reason NYC local politics is so draining but also so high impact is there are people who genuinely believe that pizzerias not being single-story buildings will ruin the character of NYC (!) and they disproportionately show up to public feedback sessions. Quote tweet of Michael Kaess: Oh no, not four-story dwellings on top of my favorite single-story pizzeria. Screenshot: The City of Yes through Town Center Zoning will permit 4-story dwellings on any commercial over-lay. For reference: imagine 4-story dwellings constructed atop your favorite single story pizzeria, restaurant or grocery store.
If you think itβs a good idea to build apartments above pizzerias, please get involved in NYC politics
Congestion pricing will improve traffic speeds and emergency response times, and deliver better and more accessible transit. Grateful to @GovKathyHochul for unpausing the pause, and for her support of the 2025-2029 @MTA capital program. My vote @MTA Board will be a "yes.β
βOur restrictive and often exclusionary zoning rules create an environment of unnecessary scarcity that amounts to a game of musical chairs, where the lowest-income New Yorkers are always the ones left standing.β
