Congrats Jani!! 🥰
Breaking News: Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most revered conservationists, died at 91. Her discoveries in the 1960s about how chimpanzees behaved in the wild broke new ground and represented what was called “one of the Western world’s great scientific achievements.” nyti.ms/42kpGxt
Research framed only by monistic, hedonistic perspectives risks harmful interventions and oversimplifies animal interests. We need pluralistic views for sound science—welfare matters, but so do biodiversity, ecosystems, and cultural values.
Important read by Sandler & Palmer on #wildanimalwelfare ethics. While I value understanding wild animal welfare, I’m troubled by strands of the movement that carry a colonialist logic—claiming to know what’s “best” for wild animals and intervening on their behalf.
Today would have been my dissertation advisor Tom Lovejoy’s birthday. I am deeply grateful for his wisdom, encouragement, and years of mentorship. He always believed in me, and his support continues to shape my path.

Love seeing WAI diving into these conversations. Conservation and welfare are really 2 sides of the same coin. Jani, I think you might be interested in this piece, which offers a thoughtful take on redefining compassionate conservation to better center wild animal welfare:

1/ The NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program is growing! Thanks to a generous grant from the New York Community Trust, our team is thrilled to announce a brand-new, first-of-its-kind project at the science-policy nexus: the Wildlife Inclusive Local Development (WILD) Lab.
Isabel Allende poses while flipping up the collar of her shirt. A headline reads: "The Interview: Isabel Allende Understands How Fear Changes a Society." Photo by Devin Oktar Yalkin for The New York Times.
Isabel Allende often writes books about women in tough spots who figure out a way through — a recurring theme that’s not far off from her own story. She recently discussed her career, grief and more. Read, listen or watch “The Interview.” nyti.ms/4m6mQED
The new center will use "the emerging science of animal sentience to design better policies, laws and ways of caring for other animals"
I believe the recording will be posted on this webpage sometime soon: www.worldwildlife.org/pages/soluti...
Really innovative talks this afternoon on transformative responses to health challenges. Interspecies communication facilitates solutions where wild animals act as active stakeholders and decision-makers in resolving human-animal conflicts and promoting more-than-human #OneHealth
Though I disagree with the implication that improving environments isn’t a prerequisite in modern zoos, which prioritize welfare practices that promote choice & control. #zooanimalwelfare
It’s vital to include animal perspectives in the research process when restoring ecosystems if we want healthy, sustainable solutions. Great article by Toni Sims, @jeffsebo.bsky.social, et al. #wildanimalwelfare #compassionateconservation

Coordinated a successful symposium on #OneHealth in collaboration with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research! An exciting day of collaborations on environmental, animal, and human #sharedhealth initiatives 💚
For once I really like the headline that an outlet picked: "To truly understand non-human grief, we need to think like the animals", my latest piece for New Scientist.
