A menacing, half-horse half-man being that is believed to have originated with Portuguese settlers in Brazil. It seems to disappear into a tomb or graveyard at the end of its wild sprint upon Earth's surface.

Besta-Fera does not seem to directly harm any humans.

Hola a todes. En todo lo que va de este año nuevo no he publicado nada, pero eso no quiere decir que haya parado la actividad del blog.

No creo que pueda tener una entrada lista cada semana como el año pasado, pero intentaré que al menos haya dos nuevas cada mes.

They raised 3.23 million yen, nearly twice the target amount. That's enough for a new model, and the rest will be spent repairing the old one, which may be installed elsewhere in the town. mainichi.jp/english/arti...

'Snow Hens' - [Fearsome Critter] - Ol' Paul once imported a flock of 8000 Chinese chickens to his camp. Some of 'em began to act coldly: Only nesting in the cold winter snow, and layin' hard-boiled eggs! The huge eggs took 7 chickens working together to lay just one! samkalensky.com/products/sno...

[Top Section] Elverkongens Datter; Alternate Names: Ellekongens Datter, Erlkönigs Tochter; Region: Parts of Scandinavia

[Middle Section] A hazy, pale woman wrapped in a dark cloak. Her eyes are piercingly green and her dark hair blends into the shadows of her cloak. She tugs at one collar with her right hand. Accompanied by descriptive text.

The elf king's daughter, said to be one of the likely predecessor legends to the more famous Erlking.

Temptress in the woods, acting to fulfill her own desires, be they lustful or vengeful. She seems to spirit away or outright kill those she lures, or it seems she may even curse those who spurn her to die to sickness later.

A death-bringing beauty, the demise of both those who accept her advances and those who deny her desires.

"Elveskud", is a ballad in an archetype involving her. Variations describe Sir Olof's death at her hand, when she is in the narrative. Some involve her use of the sickness-bringing elf-shot.

[Top Section] Chirizuka Kaiō; Region: Japan

[Middle Section] A red humanoid with a golden leaf crown and long ragged hair. His clawed hands are gripped across the lid of the chest in front of him, ready to tear it open. Accompanied by descriptive text.

A yokai that represents built up worldly attachments. He is the king of the dust head and the king of tsukumogami.

While he is popularly described as the tsukumogami king, and is depicted releasing many from an old chest, it seems he was first described as king of yamauba, though this relationship is hazy.

[Bottom Section] Some depictions in popular culture: Destiny of Spirits (2014 - 2015); Touhou Project Franchise [Chirizuka Ameba] (2025)

[Top Section] L'Home dels Nassos; Alternate Names: Hombre de las Narices, Home d'os 365 Nasos; Region: Regions of Spain including: Catalonia, Aragon, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands, Navarra, etc.

[Middle Section] A man in a green top hat, blue jacket, brown slacks, and black shoes. He has a large nose, as well as numerous other noses scattered across his face, arms, legs, and hand. He only has around seventeen visible noses on his body in this image, so it seems to capture him fairly late in the year. It seems the day has turned and one nose has fallen to the ground behind him, soon to disappear. Accompanied by descriptive text.

The Man of Many Noses, a legendary figure said to have as many noses as there are days in the year.

L'home dels nassos loses a nose for every day that passes after new year, until December 31st where he walks around with only one.

Humourously enough, he can seemingly only be seen on the last day of the year, and this is the only day where looking for him is encouraged.

L'Home de les Orelles is a similar character who has as many ears as days in a year but only appears on December 30th.

[Bottom Section] Some depictions in popular culture: The Monster of Many Noses [L'Home dels Nassos] (2024)

The Home dels Nassos is a man who starts every year with at least three hundred sixty-five noses and ends the year walking among other people with just one on his face.

The second Oss dancing a jig, while folklorist & storyteller Lisa Schneidau looks on. There is a third Oss too, the Black Oss (designed by artist Nomi Macleod and performed by my husband, dramatist Howard Gayton). Alas, we have no good photos of this dark and elusive creature, but he was certainly there, dancing merrily and mischievously behind the others.

[Top Section] Scitalis; Alternate Names: Scytale, Scytalus, Sytula; Origin: Medieval Legend

[Middle Section] A somewhat brown snake with yellow eyes, its back is obscured by glittering scales and light. Accompanied by descriptive text.

A serpent with a back marked with scales that gleam brightly in the sunlight.

A slow-moving serpent, it utilizes the gleaming patterns upon its back to daze its prey, slowing them enough that it can approach them with relative ease.

The temperature of its body is so high on average that it is known to shed its skin even in winter.

A hot, shining-backed snake. The scitalis is known for having an arrangement of glittering scales upon its back, leaving its prey stunned from seeing the glistening creature.

Local myths from where I live tell about the Ojáncano, an evil cyclops with a red and lengthy beard and a long nose where ravens land to hear and do his bidding. He breathes smoke, making his night time strolls around the woods look like a forest fire.

[Top Section] Abura Sumashi; Region: Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan

[Middle Section] A greyish-blue older humanoid with an oversized head. He appears to be wearing a straw coat and carries a walking stick in his right hand an a bottle marked "abura", meaning oil, in his left. Accompanied by descriptive text.

A mountain-dwelling yokai. If you happen to be within the mountains and passes of Kumamoto and speak about how he used to live here, he'll reply that he still does.

Rarely, it seems he'll even spontaneously appear in front of travelers to chastise them about talking about someone who is listening to them.

Primarily believed to be the spirits of oil thieves.

The common depiction of this yokai was popularized by Shigeru Mizuki, a mangaka famous for his depictions of various yokai.

Literally meaning "oil presser", it is typically thought that the spirits of those who stole oil, during a time period where it was a precious commodity, would become this yokai.
