So excited (and honored, humbled, grateful, and honestly still in disbelief) to share that I've received the 2025 Victoria Schuck Award from @apsa.bsky.social for my book Defending the Status Quo: On Adaptive Resistance to Electoral Gender Quotas (OUP).

For those wishing to explore resistance to gender equitable policies elsewhere, the book offers an analytical framework/ guide of how to study the changing nature of resistance across a policy process. 🧐🤓🕵️♀️
Resistance does not diminish; it mainly takes on new forms as open opposition to the reform and women’s political inclusion become attached to blame. 🤦
Tracing the process of a 30-year-long power struggle to adopt a gender quota law in Uruguay 🇺🇾, I show how the male political elite adapt their resistance strategies over time as quota proponents manage to push the proposal through the policy process.
I argue that lack of gender equitable institutional change and failure of gender equality policy, including quota failures, many times is the result of male political elites’ successful resistance ➡️ so do not blame women change agents!!
It deals with resistance to gender equality policy. One of the most popular electoral reforms in recent decades has been electoral gender quotas, which aim to increase the share of women in parliament. 🥳 While over 100 countries have adopted such quotas, they often fail to empower women... 😔
I’m so happy to announce that my book, Defending the Status Quo: On Adaptive Resistance to Gender Quotas, is finally here!
