Technically, I've been waiting 15 years for this. It was 2011 when Evan Schneider sent me a copy of his book, A Simple Machine. I thought it was a really cool story... and now it's a feature film! See you at the screening.
it's quite the nice turnaround for the once embattled bike lane!!

"There will not be a funding opportunity for [Safe Routes to School] construction projects this year."
Still cannot believe this happened. But what do we expect when so many legislators are unserious, underpaid part-timers?

Still can't believe what happened at council transpo committee yesterday... Just shocking bravery and speed displayed by Councilor Clark to move forward on two new fees that would save PBOT from its fiscal crisis.

The photo of Seattle, shown by PBOT. Sorry that came out confusing.
exactly. And haha look how right after these were installed on Pike in Seattle, there were a bunch that went missing
yes. More permanent, which not only provides stronger traffic calming IMO, but also is a signal from gov't that bicycling is expected, respected, and protected.
Just noticing that the photo from Seattle PBOT shows as an example of new upgrades they plan to make on NW/SW Broadway (adding planters in bike lane protection buffer zone) are behind Seattle since they've already upgraded the planters to full medians!
(Just FYI I deleted my previous post on this to clarify some terms and avoid confusion.)
Yes to be clear the TUF is a βfeeβ not a βtaxβ
Yeah for sure. I couldnβt believe when I heard her today saying she was ready to move forward and start drafting legislation.
Clark said she wants the final proposal in front of the full council by April 8th and hopes everything is buttoned up before city budget season begins in June. ππ²
Weekly news roundup is out
yeah it's pretty gross just catering to certain voting blocs w a not great idea. That tax sunsets in 2028 anyways
will JC Gonzalez running for Metro Prez and putting this on his platform, it seems at least activists will have a pressure point to ask him about.
I haven't talked to Mayor Wilson abt that idea. I think it stinks. It's a successful program and we see from open houses/survey in each district that folks are ready to pay more to fund streets/maintenance. It's like complying in advance. Gas tax also has "user pays" element that utility fee lacks.
Yes. Alongside other utilities. And the other fee, the Street Damage Restoration Fee, would be charged only to utility companies/contractors who tear up streets for projects.
The currently most flexible, local source of funding is the Fixing Our Streets, 10-cent per gallon local gas tax. It raises abt $18 million/yr & voters have passed it 3 times. Mayor Wilson has said he'd end that tax if these new sources come online. Other councilors disagree w/ that approach.
A more formal proposal will be put together and be sent to full council for further debate. But it looks like the entire T & I committee is in support of this. 2 new fees to fund PBOT. This would be a massive step if it moved forward.
"I am very moved by what I've heard in all the community feedback." - Councilor Olivia Clark
Clark puts a proposal on the table:
- a Transpo Utility Fee (TUF) at $12 per household/$9.50 for multifamily.
- a Street Damage Restoration Fee at $10.30 per square foot
Both together = $68M per year
Gotta love how Portlanders are like, βyeah we want to pay as much as everyone elseβ when asked how high the transportation utility fee should be.
Portland City Council transportation committee is hearing presentation from PBOT right now abt what people said about new funding mechanisms at recent open houses and surveys.
PBOT needs to fill $25 million budget deficit

Love that sign. And that cart pod rocks.
Iβm having over soon for an interview so stay tuned to @bikeportland.org
Wow so dismissive! I think thatβs a really unfair assessment.
At this point Iβm not sure! I need to get to know him better. But yes, tough choices given the quality folks weβve got in D3.
A council candidate w a strong transpo platform (capping freeways!) and who loves basketball as much as I do and holds his launch party at the coolest hooper store in the city. Sign me up!!
(Also note my basketball court advocacy shout-out in his speech! π€£ππ―π)
Itβs not my plan, but Iβll still answer. The demo is anyone whoβs interested in/able to bike. And the trips would be to parks, stores, etc.
health of a bike network is inversely proportional to how badly you need a GoPro on your bike in it
