Twitch screenshot of me in my office. Behind me are 3D prints of various dinosaurs featured in the first two episodes of Netflix's "The Dinosaurs": skulls of Plateosaurus, Massospondylus, Heterodontosaurus, Dilophosaurus, and a HUGE Allosaurus, plus all kinds of cycad fronds for good measure
We'll be discussing the new Netflix series "The Dinosaurs" today (I was pleasantly surprised by the first two episodes!) as well as anything else Chat is curious about
I'm still feeling a little under the weather, but I promise not to sneeze directly into the camera

There are a lot of scientific illustrators and graphic designers who are building their portfolios and will take on work for less than you might imagine. It's not out of reach.
...as brand-new research is pointing to another gigantic bolide strike at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary, it just speaks to how resilient a clade the dinosaurs were.
(And I say "were," but there's still over 10K species of dinosaurs around today β after all, birds outnumber mammal species 2-to-1)
I mean, the dinosaurs had a 170mil+ year run, so it kinda makes sense that it would take a giant rock from outer space, hitting in *just* the absolute worst spot, to knock 'em out.
And when you consider that there may have been *several* devastating impacts throughout the Mesozoic...
Twitch screenshot of me in my office. There's a big ol' 3D-printed Allosaurus skull right behind me, along with the Berlin specimen of Archaeopteryx (not the original, obviously) and some other paleontological miscellanea, including a half-finished Austroraptor model
It's Thursday BIRDSday, but before we dive into the various bird photos that chatters submitted this week, we'll be talking about some more #paleontology news and doin' some of our usual fossil science Q&A.
Feel free to drop in and join us now @ twitch.tv/paleontologizing
Here it is β pretty decent detail, with the 0.25mm nozzle on my printer. I'll be using this as a teaching aid in my online outreach. Thanks again for making the file available!
SUPER cool! I'm printing the specimen out now as I type this. Thank you for making it freely available!

Twitch screenshot of me in my office, with a 3D-printed Tiktaalik lurking in the background, along with framed prints of other basal tetrapods, cladograms, homology diagrams, and other paleontological miscellanea
We're chatting about phylogeny, weird relic stem tetrapods in the Permian, baby pachycephalosaurs, and so much more on today's #paleontology #Twitch stream -- and you're welcome to join us!

Please enjoy the single most amazing quote from a paleontologist I have ever read: βThe animal literally cemented itselfβand its nether regionsβinto eternal history like the movie stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.β π§ͺ www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...
If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.

Twitch screenshot of me in my office. Behind me are a life-sized 3D print of a gigantic Archelon rear flipper, plus a 1/3 size leatherback turtle, some ammonites, and some framed figures related to marine turtle evolution
It's a #TurtleTuesday stream today on #Twitch, wherein we'll be discussing the evolution of sea turtles (including my beloved LEATHERBACK) as well as whatever else the good folks in the chat are curious about.

Twitch screenshot of me in my office, surrounded by various stop motion dinosaur film posters, framed photos of Willis O'Brien, and a 3D-printed Brontosaurus Γ la King Kong
140 years ago today, stop motion animation pioneer WILLIS O'BRIEN was born right here in Oakland, California.
We'll be talking all about his work & legacy on today's #paleontology stream on #Twitch β and how he introduced dinosaurs to a wide audience through his films

THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S HUNGER FOR NATURAL HISTORY IS INSIATIABLE
"PLEASE!" they say, "GIVE US MORE! WE MUST FEED OUR SENSE OF WONDER WITH MUSINGS ON HUMANKIND'S PLACE IN NATURE!"
Spot on, @bobkopp.net.
ββ¦saving American climate scienceβand American science in generalβrequires that the community discard the myth of political neutrality, engage in a concerted defense of liberal democracy, and stand in solidarity with this administrationβs other targets.β
I am specifically decrying *American* imperialism and you're trying to distract with whataboutism. Please don't come into my mentions and derail. It's rude and unhelpful.
Modern Russian imperialism is a byproduct of American imperialism.
macmillan.yale.edu/reees/events...
Not voicing it feels cowardly, so I'll say it:
American imperialism is a death cult.
Greed, exploitation, and WAR β like we're seeing now β are its sacraments. It's driven multiple species to extinction already, with more to follow. If current trends continue, it will doom the human species too.
I went to Crissy Field this morning in hopes of seeing some marine mammals β and while I didn't encounter any this huge, I spotted a bunch of harbor porpoises, several common dolphins, and the largest harbor seal I've ever seen.
This place is such a gem
(To be clear though, I literally *can* wait, patiently, and I hope you're taking all the time you need. Bradley's illustrations were a big part of my childhood too, and I'm thrilled that you're working on this. Good things take time!)
I'd say "don't let the bastards get you down," but that might sound trite. Find solace where you can, take your time, and know that other folks are there too, feeling the same way you are.
We're excited to see your article when you're done β I know I can't wait to admire the JPI art in high res!
