I think it’s also partly because quite frankly many of my classmates can’t write an essay to save their lives (a methods manuscript, maybe), and it could tank GPAs and cause people to be at risk of not graduating.
It’s shocking to me that there are absolutely NO ethics classes required in my graduate statistics program. None!! No philosophy of science, no history of science, just a tacit acceptance that ML & AI are The Way Forward™️. I complained in a recent survey about it and otherwise feel kind of helpless

Thank you for your concern for your neighbors. The proposed extension of the eviction notice period raises some difficult issues, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your reasoning in support of this resolution. You’re definitely not alone in your views. As you say, the ICE invasion has created an unconscionable strain on many of our neighbors, and they are being forced to make choices that we wouldn’t wish on anyone. That being said, as to this issue in particular, the council has been hearing from housing providers, trusted non-profits in particular, who say their experiences with the eviction pause during COVID makes them unable to support this proposal; in essence, allowing tenants to fall more than a month behind actually creates more housing instability than it solves, plus it adds significant financial strain to landlords, in particular non-profits and providers of so-called “naturally occurring affordable housing.” At the Committee of the Whole meeting yesterday, many of the major affordable housing providers in Minneapolis showed up to speak against the resolution – Catholic Charities, Beacon, Agate, Common Bond, Aeon, Project for Pride in Living, Twin Cities Housing Alliance and
RS Eden; in total there were 15 providers who signed a letter in opposition. This group represents many of our strongest housing partners, which we have supported with dollars from our Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and who provide thousands of units of affordable housing in our city, helping many people coming directly from being unhoused. They have decades of experience in this area, and so when they speak with a united front it’s crucial to trust the experts. All were concerned that this policy would create more long-term harm for those most vulnerable to housing insecurity, including making it difficult to pay back rent, which exposes more people to evictions and creates a record of nonpayment (which still must be paid, making it more difficult to find more housing). These providers have all seen this cycle play out firsthand in the lives of the people they are trying to help. Of course, this would also affect their financial situation as they also have bills to pay, but for these groups this was not their primary motivation in speaking out. They reiterated the help most needed for people right now is rental assistance. The council recognizes that, which is why we passed $1 million in rental assistance, $500,000 for immigrant legal assistance, and $7 million for small business aid. Yet it is still not enough, and that is why we are lobbying the state to provide additional, substantial rental assistance as soon as possible.

IME, before you apply for SIJS, you need to have a state court find that your parent(s) abused, abandoned or neglected you. In MN we’d do it in probate guardianship proceedings. It absolutely sucks and we also generally had to attempt to serve the probate court papers internationally.
