I'm a big fan of the late 90s silicone graphics stuff that you'd see in N64 games but i also like the PS1 and PS2 visuals like the stuff in oldgen armored core. Gen 4 AC visuals are still really cool to me as well.

As someone who watched all of Layzner the movement they do in the anime is wild so thats a good inspiration to take from.

We're lucky we got mecha anime in the 80s that had 50 episodes actually even Dougram had 75 and it wouldn't be nearly as incredible without that many episodes.

my favorite use of his "hole" motif on his designs is the patlabor helldiver, it has these flip up leg panels that are used to break in the air for descending just like the real helldiver plane
