βThe board of trustees must realize that this is no longer just about Columbiaβ¦we can either succumb to authoritarianism or stand up against it. Columbiaβs decisions will impact not just our present community, but the entire nation and world for decades to come.β
Columbia faculty (700+ signatures!) urges our Trustees to do 6 things:
1. Stand up for higher ed
2. Fight back against federal attacks (sue!)
3. Protect our students
4. Preserve academic freedom & fac governance
5. Affirm tenants of DEI
6. Protect research & provide backup funding

It appears that 2 things, Harvardβs strong stance resisting Trumpβs demands & negative publicity toward Columbiaβs potential agreement to similar demands, have resulted in the postponement of any announcement from Columbia re its capitulation to Trump. Letβs see how this goes.

Scientists & faculty of the Columbia Irving Medical Center spoke out today on Trumpβs ongoing assault on Columbia & all higher learning in America & how cuts in vital scientific research will harm the health of ALL Americans.
Listen to Dr. Delivette Castor, Professor of Medicine & Epidemiology.
complacency = complicity
Every time you see someone powerful acting like a craven coward in the face of this authoritarian menace, let it stiffen your own spine. We are all we've got.
Our commitment to inclusive scientific excellence will be such that a generation from now we will obliterate their names into the sad footnotes of what was once a very dark hiccup in our path to great achievements.
Eviscerating the future of our academic and scientific communities is exactly where an authoritarian government would start. Joke is on them because most of us have never been more committed to ensuring our science and a trainees live and thrive on.
What happened last night at Columbia was nothing short of catastrophic. In the blink of an eye hundreds of grants disappeared. In a particularly vile showing of this administrationβs complete contempt for the long-term health and well-being of this nation, training grants were completely gutted.
congratulations!!!
study is back up, only a few days left to participate!
reminder to please complete this ~5 minute survey about the impact of executive orders on academia. Will only be around for a couple of more days and we want to make sure your voice is captured.
I just completed this survey and it was so validating to write out my thoughts. I'll admit that I scrolled past the last time I saw the link so, if that happened to you, here's the link again below.
nerds are out, and we have our backpacks with us
Donald Trump and Elon Muskβs idea of efficiency is stopping research on curing cancer.
Please consider completed this ~5 min survey on the impact of executive orders on academics. In a time of such uncertainty, there is power in sharing our stories.
Imagine if university presidents instead of cowering, called up their faculty too speak in a round-the-clock marathon across the nation about how their research serves every American who has ever faced illness and disease.
I wish I wouldβve gotten as many emails as I am just a couple of weeks ago (into last week) when DEI was the target of attacks rather than indirects. π€
This is a fantastic idea!
Quick reminder that if you have tenure, this is the time you need to use it. This is what it is for. This moment, right now. Sorry to have to inform you of this, but it's important.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.
I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.
Hero lawyers in state AG offices busted their asses over the weekend to get this done. Now do your part: call your Representative and Senators TODAY. Call your AG AND governor and voice your support for these lawsuits.
Get in Dorks, we are going protesting.
STAND UP FOR SCIENCE. MARCH 7th 12-4pm. DC AND YOUR STATE CAPITALS.
More information to come.
