The House should pass the Secure Rural Schools Act now. And in future years, Congress should authorize the bill permanently, or for a much longer (say 10-year) period, so rural schools aren’t twisting in the wind every couple of years

Late last week, the U.S. Senate approved the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act (S 2581). This bipartisan measure would reauthorize SRS through 2026, but funds aren’t guaranteed until the bill passes the House, which is expected to take up the measure this week

The SRS is the primary funding mechanism to provide rural students with educational and transportation opportunities comparable to students in suburban and urban areas. Nationally, more than 4,400 rural schools receive SRS funds in 41 states. In California, LEAs in 29 counties receive SRS funding
