When I was a medical student 45 years ago, I clerked in a 13 year old girl with deep jaundice and an abdominal mass. She was Hepatitis B positive. That had led to a primary liver tumour. In a 13-year-old. She was dead within the month. Avoidable with vaccination.

People who are writing PhDs into their project proposals at this point either need a credible non-academic career plan for them or should be hiring postdocs instead

Sage Journals: Discover world-class research
Subscription and open access journals from Sage, the world's leading independent academic publisher.
All the takes about fake LLM citations reminded me of this very good paper, "Academic urban legends" about how "a decimal point error appears to have misled millions into believing that spinach is a good nutritional source of iron."

Today I'll be arguing that AI tools (specifically LLMs and AI agents) are NOT the future of health and social science but are more likely to be the death of health and social science.
Here's a sneak peak slide with the main components of my argument.

Meme. Photograph of an eel underwater. The eel is yellow in color, with a piercing eye and adorable nostril horns. We'll call her Brandabrenda. You can just see one of her fins at the edge of the picture. She looks to be smiling, but not a jovial smile. It's the uncertain but hopeful smile of a man meeting a blind date at a biker bar. Brandabrenda is swimming low in the water, just above a sandy-looking bottom. Her shadow looms just below her, a negative-spaced eel that reminds you of the fragility of meaning and the patience of the following dark.
Imagine, if you will, that this is the last eel in the world. And *you* have to break the news to her. How would you feel? Wouldn't it be better if you could tell her that a renewed focus on eels in human history has led to a revival of the species?
Let's do that. Brandbrenda deserves some good news.
Meme text reads:
"Have you seen my friends?
I'm lonely"
Every now & again, it's useful to say why I do all these eel history tweets.
Mostly, it's because eels need our help. They're critically endangered, seeing a c.90% drop in population in the last decades.
But it's hard to get people to care! 'Cause...eels are gross & slimy. 1/2

Fun post, but I strongly disagree with the premise that journals (as opposed to for-profit, closed-access journals) are the problem.
This person has clearly not experienced the cancer that is CS arXiv.
