I showed native R compilation on #iOS last week. Shipping it is another story (thanks, GPL). This version uses #webR 's #WebAssembly build instead. Different tradeoffs, but this one clears App Review.

It was great working on this with my wonderful GSU colleagues Ashleigh Cox and @danielhdixon.bsky.social. We hope you all put the VLG to good use and let us know what features would be good to include in future versions of the tool.

It incorporates the dispersion measures recommended by Egbert and Burch (2023): evenness and pervasiveness. While pervasiveness is incorporated in other publicly available digital tools in the form of range measures, evenness has yet to make its way to such tools, which is why we developed the VLG.

What you are describing reminded me of teaching language learners metacognitive strategies about their own learning, so the term you are looking for could include metacognition.

Bill Labov, an absolute titan of linguists, died yesterday at 97. He virtually invented the field of sociolinguistics, and then was its leading light for many decades.

It could be motivating if the words align with the learners’ goals. For example, if the goal is learning conversational skills, seeing words common in academic writing may not be that motivating, so I think that alignment between words and target language goals would be a nice feature to have.

Looking forward to this—and not having to travel for it!
