The action in the Gulf is geopolitical blundering but again helps Putin as Russia is a major gas exporter suffering recently from a cash crisis due to sanctions and war.
Nothing Trump does seems to work or go to plan - unless make the assumption it's for Putin's benefit is made and then surprisingly it seems like a coherent plan*

My impression is that probably felt like he redeemed himself by doing this but as a triple murderer and rapist - he is much more like Huntley than he is compared to most other prisoners.
