"There may be some heteronormative bias around subjects such as IVF; students may think IVF is only available to heterosexual couples. It is important when giving case studies to students to include different examples of who may use IVF."
"Students may have the misconception that sex is binary, when in fact it is non-binary. Students will come across data that treats sex as binary. Students will have some understanding of variations in sex traits (intersex) from Unit F170"
"Sickle cell disease is often associated with people of African ancestry, and not usually Hispanic, Latinx, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean heritage, despite it being prevalent in these communities. When teaching it may be useful to draw examples from a broad, cross-section of these individuals"
"Race is also a socially constructed concept, and not a scientific one. Students may hold the misconception that someoneβs race can impact their biological outcomes, but cultural and socioeconomic differences between communities are more important for health outcomes than their ancestry"
"Different cultural norms or personal experiences in the classroom may lead students to prioritise or dismiss certain aspects of health. Creating an inclusive environment to address any preconceived notions of health is important throughout this unit."
Here is a sample of the guidance we have used in our schemes of work for teachers of the @cambridgeocr.bsky.social Cambridge Advanced Nationals in Human Biology and Applied Science:

CAR: To foster engagement and support positive outcomes, itβs important that the curriculum covers a wide range of experiences and representation, as well as promoting our shared values, to build empathy and understanding of others.

Hi Michael. @ocrexams.bsky.social have made a BSL glossary to support the teaching of science at KS4 and KS5, in collaboration with the Edinburgh group. Would be great to get your thoughts www.ocr.org.uk/blog/introdu... @allyphysics.bsky.social
Can I recommend checking out @ocrexams.bsky.social's BSL glossary? www.ocr.org.uk/blog/introdu... aligned to the videos made by the Edinburgh group & in collaboration with them. See how it can be used across all 3 sciences @chatchemistry.bsky.social @chatbiology.bsky.social @chatphysics.bsky.social
