This is a great, pithy piece from @xuanrulin.bsky.social on why we shpuld probably stop thinking of 'Oxbridge' as an amorphous blob.

Neck and neck a decade ago, there's been a marked difference in economic performance since. The varsity match is looking a little one sided these days...

Lifting the threshold reduces monthly cost to graduates but will actually increase the psychological pain of endlessly increasing debt (because they’ll be paying even less off).

Govt right to look for an immediate mitigation of grad’s fury, but only a new system can resolve the problem long term.

It's a problem the interest rates are getting so much attention (which impacts higher earners as keeps them in repayments longer) but issues like the level repayments start + how much money students actually have to live on at uni (which impact lower income students much more) get less attention

Sure, it’s disgusting and soulless, but on the other hand: very helpful for fraudsters

Not to mention it's literally happening already via food trends like "fibremaxxing" and people worried about increasing rates of bowel cancer. People used to drive home after 4 pints and not wear seatbelts, behaviour can change!

Side note: read this story in the weekend FT which I regularly buy because one thing we can do to stop the ever faster dystopian slide is pay for the good quality stuff you actually want to consume! Fight the slop!

Even beyond the ghoulish growth of "nudification" and its horrors, this is all still fucking grim. AI models built to diagnose liver disease from blood tests are 2x as likely to miss it in women than men. Identical salary recommendation prompts produce up to $100k difference depending on gender.

There is not a better roster in all of UK media. Buying the FT weekend is my favourite new pretentious habit I've acquired in my 30s but it just keeps getting better!

Economic Insecurity is foundational for Labour’s electoral losses, and key to any potential recovery - Nuffield Politics Research Centre

When you go around talking to people, it is screamingly obvious that the decision tree is:

1) Are you feeling economically insecure and hit by the cost of living?

2) If 'y', how do you feel about immigration

3) If you answer 'positive', please tick the box marked 'Zack Polanski'.

i really believe in tackling gender inequality but few things seem quite as wrongheaded to me as the demand to transfer wealth from poorer younger generations with a far-distant retirement age, lower real wages and very little hope of property acquisition, to wealthy boomers who didn't read a letter

Chatbots β€” LLMs β€” do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re β€œright” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Traitors is a good demonstration of how the worst strategy in the game is to try and apply logic. Just leads to people saying β€œwell a Traitor would say that!! I’m going to keep in the nice grandma because a nice grandma could never be a Traitor!”

I dunno I reckon this is about right, I've intended to do a lot of things in my garden but not many of them actually got done.

I bet 100% of adults intend to mow the lawn next weekend but not a lot of lawns will be mown

Imagine you're in a weird romcom where Paul Hollywood is your rival. Do you go "let's have a bread baking competition" or do you emphasise your own relative strengths?

Because that in short has been the central problem with the traditional two's approach to anti-immigration voters and Reform UK.
